I read through the message thread. I tapped with rubber mallet (scarily and not hard at all), tapped with my finger and shook. I was still getting the start spin, two beeps, stop, start again in 30 seconds.
I unplugged it to go into the office and plug into a PC when I realized that the Maxtor plug I had pulled from the power cord was dragging my cable modem. It seems I had a Comcast power cord plugged into the Maxtor and vice versa. I plugged the Maxtor cord back in and the drive appeared and the beeping stopped.
I had valuable footage of artists and DJs at work so I am going to dump that video footage onto a 1TB Seagate so I have it in two spots and then start dumping it to DVDs for a 3rd backup. |

any updates to this problem?
My Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB PATA133 HDD just gave me the, (now that I have read this thread) dreaded melody of hdd death!
I have tried the tapping, knocking, twisting, spinning and even 15 mins in the freezer but still nothing!
Now, when I do turn it on, my computer does recognize it with a 'ding' and if I go into compmgmt from run, it shows as a drive that has not been initialized and also does not allow it to be initialized either.
Would I still be able to retreive my data using a data restor software or would I have to take it to the professionals?
thanks in advance! |

| Maxtor 'Onetouch' Portable Drive 'Beep'
Not exactly the same problem, but though I would share anyway...
I have a Maxtor 'Onetouch' 250 GB portable drive that had been acting a little suss (intermittent erros when playing media files etc). Today I finally got around to purchasing a NAS RAID setup, and went to back up the drive, and (sods law) the Onetouch didn't work anymore!
The drive just sat there making a beeping sound, and was not recognised by the PC. The sound was not as musical as some of the drives shown on this thread, more of a 'blip'. The drive sounded like it was spinning OK, but there were a few unusual clicks along with the beeps, like something was oscillating inside.
Found this thread via google and tried the 'thump' method with no luck, even with an agressive thump.
Last resort was the freezer bag, nothing to lose at this point. 5 mins in the freezer, and lo and behold she is now working again!! I'm backing it up right now, and very thankful that I've now invested in RAID storage.
Just sharing the info in the hope it might help someone else... |

| Now look what you have done!!!
Well, after several months, I dragged out the old maxtor and gave it another go at getting it to run.
1. remove the screws on the top cover, plus the one under sticker, that says "Do not remove"
2. Stared at it for a while.
3. Took a pair of needle nose pliers and stuck the tips into two holes directly accross from each other on the center chuck of the plates.
4. began to turn the plates slowly. At first it was very stiff, little by little it began to free up.
5. after 5 minutes of manually spinning the plates, I tried pluggin the drive up. It looked like it was trying to turn the plates. So I got a bit excited.
6. I turned the plates manually for another 5 minutes, this time they where loose enough to turn with my finger.
7. Plugged up drive as I spunn the plates with finger, and it spun very slow.
8. after a few more attempts, I managed to get the plates spinning at top speed.
9. Now I think the problem is the heads are damaged. This is an easy fix since they dont have to be date specific like swapping plates or HD cards.

CC | Hi copy-cat - thanks for your feedback. I have done exactly the same thing (yes, I have been following this thread for many a year in hope). The drive is spinning up now but there's no other sign of life. As I understand a head change is quite difficult - you need to ensure the platters do not slip out of their alignment, otherwise you end up with scrambled data. Are you planning to do this? If so, please let us know how you get on and how you did it!
thanks! |

I hope everyone here is talking about the Same Maxtor HD as I continue to work on this.
I believe a head replacement can be done without removing the plates.
(anyone care to correct me; go right ahead)
What happened to my HD you might ask?
My desk is pretty much organized. My HD was sitting where it normaly sits, plugged in and working. My wife's laptop was sitting accross, just behind my desk. She was chatting online, or was it watching a movie, idontknow..... Anywho, she bursts into laughter and thows herself back, thus falling back on her chair and somehow dragging the majority of the items on my desk to floor, including my HD. Since it was on, the plates where spinning. Very bad, very bad.....
As I understand while the HD is "on" the plates are constanly spinning unless powered down or hibernated. When it impacted the floor the heads touched the plates. This is bad. During the initial opening of the HD cover I noticed the heads where not pulled back to its normal "off" resting position. When you move the heads out of the way you must spin the plates as you are moving the heads. My heads where stuck on the plates. This could mean that some data will not be readable, but I am going ahead with replacing the heads with the heads from another Maxtor HD.
I'll keep you posted on my progress and what I did exactly.

same thing happened to mine, fell while spinning.
data recovery companies have quoted me $350-500 minimum. I'm hoping one of you guys can come up with a DIY that we all can use! |
