Mine would not boot at all when I was in IDE socket # 4 on my Gigabyte GA-7vrxp and kept getting that friggin tone. I tapped the drive lightly with a rubber hammer. Still no reboot.

(actually this is one of the raid channels but you also can use it as a single IDE socket)

So I pulled the cable out of my dvd drive on a different IDE channel and plugged it in.

The Maxtor spooled up and the noise was gone.

I am backing up the drive today before I return it.

Actually I just called them and I let them know about my problem, let him hear the noise and he said that I would definitely have to send it in. I told him that I need to recover the data on the drive and he told me I could go through a data recovery service near my area and they charge around $300 - $1500 on average, depending on how much data needs to be recovered. Well I have around 90gb of fansubs and stuff on it thus far so I was thinking of just buying another Maxtor for around $120 or so and somehow magically making my current fault drive work long enough to copy all the stuff over to the new one.

So I've read up above about how ScottW got his to work, I was wondering if you could elaborate on that. And if that doesn't work - what are the chances that it will work if I "freeze" it? AND I'm thinking that I'll need it to be spinning for at least an hour to give me enough time to recover everything.

Maxtor tek support says "this is a (designed in) diagnostic code that signals a failure of start up rotation." The beeps emit from the drive itself.

I recently upgraded to a 80gig seagate. This drive occasionally emits a quick "beep" when I shut the computer off.

I guess all the HD manufacturers are starting to incorporate beeping diagnostics similar to what mobo's have had for years.

Hi all!

I have exactly the same problem. Maxtor diamondmax plus 9, 80 gig. hd, it died after 3 weeks, and I also have some important stuffs on it :\ I'll try to get it back somehow, do you have any ideas? I'll try to tap it softly too, but if it isn't working, what should I try?

Thanks for the help!

As above, don't try anything - just call their tech support dept and get a new one for free. If you open it, they'll charge you for a new one.

Re all!

Good news. When I've read what maxtor said about the sound signal (spinup error), and all the other posts, I tried to tap the HD softly too. Not with a rubber hammer, 'cause my one is at home, but with my hand, realy softly. When I put it back, it beeped a little when got power the first time, but after that it spinned up, and worked fine. So I saved all of my data to another HD, and now run the maxblast read/write tests for at least 3 days to see if it crashes again ;]

I also have a DiamondMax Plus 9 120 GB drive that failed after a few months of light use. It started playing that exact same little song and refused to spin up. So I picked it up while it was running and clunked it back down again. Not too hard, just a good solid kick in the pants. Presto, it started spinning.

I was able to get all my data off the piece of junk without voiding the warranty.
