I just had a DiamondMax do exactly the same thing to me, and until I found this forum I was going insane since I had no idea what was going on! Thanks for the info guys.
One more question though...
From what I understand if I hit the drive it jolt it back to operation.
Now will maxtor replace the srive? I mean it will seem like it working fine won't it? |

PyroSama | Yep. Or hit it until it will never work again, but that's stress relief.
As for the beeping phenominon, I smell a Maxtor recall on the horizon.
As for hitting the drive, no. Not sure abotu MAxtor, but WD's limit for maximum g-forces the grive can sustain is 300Gs. For comparison, Jet Fighter pilots rarely get over 10 Gs, if at all. |

My main worry is; will maxtor replace the drive evn though I "fixed" the problem and got my data back?
I mean from what I gather the problem disappears after the "fix", I wouldn't want to keep a drive that has a soundblaster on it! |

If fix=tapping drive, then yes, they will replace it. I've sent hard drives I thought were bad, but were perfectly functional back to them becuase of errors, and they've gone through on it (checked serial #s). And since the drive ISN'T functioning properly, they WILL RMA it. The "fix" is within the limits of the warranty.
If fix=opening drive, then no. |

Thanks Redwolf!
Yes, I didn't mean "fix" as in tapping. Which as aformentioned does work!!
Only... the BIOS still reports that the drive fails, but windows sees it just fine. |

| No more Maxtor for me
Just installed a new 60 gb Maxtor yesterday. Turned the computer off overnight. After I started it up this morning, the hard drive started making ugly clicking noises and then crashed. My husband took the hard drive out of the case and then started the computer again. Same thing with black screen saying put in boot disk. I turned the hard drive over and started the computer up again. In several attempts, I managed to transfer the important material to another networked computer. Seems the hard drive is heating up and crashing. Not to give MS credit, but I am glad I have 2000 installed, win 95 or 98 would never stand this. Now if I can I am going to wipe it clean and send it back to Maxtor. Going to use it for spare when I get a new one back. Also going to try using my old 40 gb and a 30 gb as a backup this time. Trying to beat the clock is stressful! |

I have an old 27G Maxtor at home.
A while ago it was taking a while to spin up and making little beeps.
A couple of times it would not start until I hit reset.
I ran out and bought a CDRW and backed up my stuff.
About then it stopped misbehaving.
I suspected the problem was due to a bad connection.
I wonder now if the beeping is Maxtor's way of kick-starting a stuck drive. |

| hot finger tapping works, too
Thanks for the tapping advice. Otherwise I would lose my data..
I have just verified that the technique worked for my 80gig even when BIOS screen was up. In the first try, IDE auto detection was failing. Tapped once and retried the detection, and the drive was detected after a 'tock' sound from the disk. All parameters popped up, saved and exited bios..
It's booting now.. Thanks a lot..

Hey guys, welcome to TechIMO! Glad you found us here.
Just out of curiosity, how did you come across this thread?
A search engine is my guess. |

| Yet another happy shaker
I woke up this morning; started my computer; and instead of starting, it sang back to me. As you may have guessed by now, it was my HD; my 200GB Maxtor DiamonMax+
After an hour of "why didn't I make backups?" type of remorse, and as I was preparing it to be shipped, I decided to check the web. All I had to do is type "maxtor beeps" in google and the very first hit brought me here.
I tried tapping; then shaking; then shaking while power plugged (not a ketchup bottle shake but rather a wrist twist); and viola! It started spinning.
I'm not sure if I want to return it yet. May be if it does it again. If I do return it, Maxtor will send me a refurbished one (their policy replaces with a brand new one only if the purchase occured less than 30 days ago). I have a feeling that they may just shake it and return it.
I have a feeling that this problem occurs for a reason. The last time I turned off the computer, I turned off the power switch while the HD was doing stuff (probably indexing). I always do a normal shutdown but my computer was hung up at the time. I wonder if the other people with this problem did a normal shutdown before the problem occured.
Many thanks to ScottW who starting this very helpful thread. |
