omasound, I don't recomend hanging on to that drive, you see I thought of the same thing after I fixed mine, stick to it until it does it again... Well, it was working fine for 2 weeks and then it went completly out!! (( No beeping, no bios recognision, nothing!! It just spins REALLY fast now and even makes my master drive invisible to the system. Needless to say it didn't go through the trouble of backing up and did loose everything at the end!
I called maxtor and they actually have an advanced RMA system in which they send you a drive and once you get it you have 30days to send the bad one back to them. So I recomend going through this procedure. Get a new drive, Ghost the old one, while it still works, and then send it back to them.
Oh, one final thing are you sure about the re-furbished part?because they didnot say anything like that about the drive they are sending me.
Anyway, good luck with it! |

am397, thanks for the advice.. I think I might end up doing just that. As for the re-furbished part, I'm pretty sure I read that in the agreement page (the last step) when you request an RMA at their website. Well.. they don't actually call it re-furbished. They call it factory certified or something. |

Thanks also to Scott W. for your information on the Maxtor drive beeps. Mine is doing the same thing...My question for you is, can you be certain of getting it to 'spin' when you open up the box?? I know, I shouldn't open the box, but I have family photos on that stupid drive (which I used exactly once before it self-destructed), and I can't afford $1500 to get the data off...it's not replaceable...
I can't believe Maxtor will not be responsible for getting the data--it is their fault I can't access it!!! How was I to know they have this flaw in their machinery? Does anyone else have a problem with their logic?
Any advice? |

Whew! I guess I dodged a bullet with the Maxtor Drives, I almost pulled the trigger on a pair of them but went with serial ATA Seagates instead. If I have any problems out of them you will see it all over this site. I hope things get better in the reliability dept. for all of us. I hate the thought of losing important information behind things like this. |

This sound comes out if the drive fails to start spinning when it gets power. Not sure about what actually generates the sound but it's probably mentioned somewhere in this thread.
I'd suggest that you RMA it if still under warranty. If it happens once, it's likely to happen again. (as it did to me). |

Using my PC Last night, Shut down, went out for about 1 hour then on return it started singing. My raid array was offline and only 1 drive was detected. I have a Gigabyte 8ihxp with 2 x Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 160gb + 8mb drives and one of them is singing. I was unable to get it to start spinning but I will try more violence tonight. I was so pleased to find this thread as I have been trawling Mac threads all denying the drives don't make any audible alerts! Thanks! I was only thinking about making a backup last night as well! Duhh! |
