It fails the S.M.A.R.T. test in PowerMax, but seems to boot and run fine. I'll play it by ear, I guess. |

Googled my way in here. I experienced the same audible tones 2 nights ago from my 2 month old Maxtor Ultra Series 160GB (7200rpm, 8MBcache) hard drive. There was a lot of clicking and computer freezing going on as well (this is my primary drive). I turned the computer off and let it marinate for the night. The next morning it booted without any bonus accoustics, but the computer now boots and runs noticably slower. It's a 2.4 Ghz system, but the thing now runs like my old 2.4 Mhz that I owned in the late 90's. I'll guess I now need to look into an RMA and backup my data before this drive goes south completely. |

Well I just purchased a Brand Spanking New Maxtor 160 gig ATA HD
Plugged it in, and Voila - That noise was instant. I was abit confused at start, so looked on the net and up popped this Site.
I am going to give my supplier a Call tomorrow, and if they seem useless I will give Maxtor UK a call (as thats where I am).
Very annoying!!

There must be something special that Maxtor does with their drives when it fails. I remember when my 20gb or something Maxtor was failing, there was this musical "tones" to it. My other drives (Western Digital) just fail, no sound, just a silent death. |

Good luck with MAxtor, they want you to do everything via Ireland so you have to pay international posting fees. I was able to send mine back to where I got it and received a new one the very day after they recieved it (folllowed via there RMA tracker). Kudo's to Scan computers!
I now have the new drive and something I have noticed is that it is far quiter! The fan I had before although not loud, when the PC was off and I had left it on by mastake you could notice it, the only way I notice it now is cause of the blue light. I was wondering why it said Whispear quiet operation when it was a little louder than that, so I guess I just got a faulty one to begin with. Hopefully this one will be okay! |

Ireland for me I dont mind so much, but IBM were worse with the DeathStar series. I had 3 fail on me. Had to ship them to Holland.
Luckily when you buy stuff in the UK it has to come with 1 years warranty from the supplier, then anything longer comes from Manufacturer.
I spoke to the guy on the other end of the phone telling him my brand new maxtor is beeping at me, and he was like er.......
Had to tell him its a Maxtor Feature
Well hopefully new drive will come sometime next week without the problems this one has. Very annoying when I was off to a lan this weekend

S | I work for PC world and I can tell you that certainly we do not honor this for all products. Certain products are allowed to be returned to the stores other products the customer most deal with the manufacturer. |

Were you successful w/ getting the data off of the drive you opened?
How long did the drive last after it was opened?
A quick reply would be appreciated.
Thanks!

| Anyone had success "opening" the singing maxtor?
Has anyone had success in opening the "singing" maxtor drives mentioned earlier and successfully getting the data off of them? The refrig trick has not worked yet. The drive still gives me the hormonic song and does not spin up at all.
