| Smacking...
Yea, a couple of times. I did not want to be extreme about it. I'm ready to give anything a try. I was quoted $4400 for an 80% recovery... |

Did you smack it with the power on? The bearings are stuck or the heads are keeping the platters from turning. |

| I googled my way here as well.
This is a looong thread. I don't think I will ever trust maxtor IDE drives again. Maybe they'll be better with their S-ATA line. Ok, getting to the point, I shook, tapped, hit, yelled, and flatulated on my maxtor 120gb IDE DMAX+9 HDD. None of it has done the job of getting the platters to spin atleast one more time to recover my data. I have some X-Ray info on the drive so the data is semi-critical. My old 120gb Maxtor died after a year, same reason. The new HDD died in less than a week! Any suggestions other than throwing it in a sandwich bag and placing it into my fridge for the evening?
Thanks,
JF |

I have the same problem, I tried tapping it, hitting it, freezing it, singing back to it, and some prayers and some tears, and still nothing. It just makes that haunting music. And mine is a 250GB drive, with every possible data that I need on it.
Data recovery is going to cost me an insane amount Im sure..
Im so tempted to open it up, because it feels as tho something is just stuck, and its not really dead, but who knows.. Maxtor said they think its just a bad drive, and cant do anything about the data. |

My buddies maxtor 120gig failed like that. He simply moved the jumper he said! I know he's no noob so it was configed right. After swicthing back he said it still sang a bit-then just stoped all together. Returned it got another but diff drive all together after that. The bearings at that speed could definatly make a sound if bad. Specially if they are seezing.

That's just to let you know how nice Maxtor is, as of 5/12/03, reducing warranties on retail HDDs to a single year (or even 90 days in one case)...
Oh, and I'm lucky enough to have a 250GB Diamondmax Plus 9 drive that does the same thing (albeit the beeps sound a bit different) and have had no luck with shaking or smacking it. It occurred about 5-6 days after purchase, so I guess I'll just exchange it for a new drive @ Office Depot - good thing I only paid $100 for it.

They are "all" reducing to one year. You can pay $15 extra for 3 years after purchase. Or in WD case also if you buy the special edition drives they still have 3 years. |

While manufacturers are decreasing their warranties on lower end drives, Western Digital provides an unparalleled 5 year manufacturer warranty on their enterprise SATA drives (the 37GB Raptor and 74GB Raptor). http://www.westerndigital.com/en/pro...asp?DriveID=65
If you want a great warranty, get one of those. |
