| help me identify my burner!
I have an acer burner, Win2k identifies it as a standard atapi burner rather than identifieing it by brand or model or anything. is there an app that can tell me what it is?
I want to know so i can update drivers/firmware.
btw i just wanted to do this because windows id's my dvd drive as "lg dvd rom blah blah" and my burner as "ATAPI 12/8/32"
thanks!

There's some diagnostic software that's used for DVD's, it works w/ any CD/CDR/CDRW drive as well.
I'll find it and post back. |

| Here it is. Look at the 'readme.txt' to show you what info is shown for which kind of drive. |

If you don't want to download, if you know the speeds and etc, I think you can guess which burner yours is...
And a little info about those 2 sheep EFM burners.. if you have 2 sheep, and when backing up a game, you do'nt need AWS (amplify weak sectors). If you have 1 sheep like in that chart, then you'd need AWS, and if that doesn't work, you should try Betablocker.. (AWS is primarily for Safedisc) |

thank you much gentlemen....i went to the acer site, and it turns out that i didn't have to ID it anyway...windows just applys the appropriate drivers. It also said not to mess with the firmware unless you are having problems.
I thought updating firmware was just as important as updating drivers? Si o no?

If you are having problems, si. If you are not having problems, and are going to continue doing the same things which have always been successful, leave it as it is. If, however, you forsee that you will try burning something you have never tried before, you may discover that the does not have the capability, and that is the kind of problem a firmware might be intended to fix.

Ditto with Dunbar, upgrading the firmware isn't really that important, problems arise, similar to a BIOS update. |
