Win98SE here.
If I understood correctly, the drive stops responding to all input.
If you push the drive open button, nothing happens (at least this is what mine occasionally does!). A reboot restores normal operation.
I doubt this could be caused by bad media or improper ASPI files.
A real mystery!

Fouled ASPI might put the drive in an inappropriate state.

Remember that burning software can lock some CDRW drives via software (my 2x2x6 Philips, for example), and commands are usually issued to drives based on various OS events (ever open 'My Computer' and have the floppy access light go off?).

I'd say it was worth the effort, since ASPI repairs gave an older 4x2x6 yammy better success rate.

Hey, just out of curiosity... for you guys that have this problem, what happens if you try a software eject from inside My Computer when it's locked up?

Nothing!
Just checked my ASPI layer and I did have one new file from something. Ran Force ASPI and now all files 4.60.
Have to see what happens.

XP does not come with ASPI drivers installed like win9X os's. Should run fine without them.
Updating them would not hurt but you might want to make sure that after force APSI you update them to the latest XP compatible ones from adeptecs site.

If I select Eject from My Computer it does open the drive; however, I have to manually push it closed and it still doesn't read the CD.
