I have a 3.2 gb JTS harddrive that seems to have died, but I would like to try all possible remedies to retrieve some data.
No matter how I install it (secondary master, slave or cable select), at boot I get the message:
"Secondary Master Drive - ATAPI Incompatible
Press F1 to Resume"
When I press F1, the machine finishes the boot sequence as normal, but the secondary drive is not visible, either by Windows or Norton Disk Doctor.
Question: Is it dead, or is there something else I can try?
(I have tried changing cables, computers, etc.) |

Sounds to me like the cable is bad, there is no power to the drive or the board is blown/damaged. So you can try slaving it off the first drive, try using a different power connector, if not then there are places that offer data recovery (for a fee) if it's that important. |

Well, I've tried all those suggestions to no avail.
The data is not (at this time) worth the cost of the data recovery "Professionals"! |

Have you tried to set the cylinders heads and sectors in the BIOS? |

No. Can I do that even though the drive is not listed? |

It had been a while since I looked at the bios setup. I am trying that right now. |

The BIOS will not allow me to enter the Cyln and Head data, even though I have selected "User" as the Type.
Using "Auto" results in a prolonged search with no results.
What is the significance of the "ATAPI Incompatible" error message? |

It means the controller is communicating something that it doesn't recognize, (jibberish) so it is saying that it is not an IDE drive. |

Does that mean that it does in fact find the drive?
But for some reason it can't communicate with it?
If so, are there any suggestions along this line? |
