Transferring old files to new pc.

For myself I have always slaved the hd from the old pc onto the new one to move files to the new pc. My sis-in-law bought a new DELL from a link I gave her in docs deal and it has xp on it where as her old gateway has 98 on it.She wants me to come over and transfer her files.I'm wondering what methods you guys use? Could a guy connect via a crossover cable into the nics and do it? I'm looking for simplest easiest. And tell me how NOT to screw up lol.

Ghost if she has a burner, Otherwise you'll need 2 Hd's for it to work.

Which files? just mydocuments and stuff?

You can hook up a x-over cable to the nics, then set up a basic peer-peer network and copy the files that way, but if she wants win98 on the new one then you'ld have to use a different way.

I think just her favs, a few pics, checkbook files etc, probably not too much. But she will be using xp home on the new machine. No burner in the old gateway.I can slave her old hd onto the machine, but will xp recognize the what I assume will be fat32 files?

Yes, XP will see it, You can do it that way, I was assuming you didn't want to open up her PC

WinXP has a file transfer wizard (at least my copy of XP Pro does) that tells you how step by step.

If she's got as little as that, you might use an external Zip drive.

i just slave the hd to her new machine too it is sooo easy . but if it is new and assuming that she has a warranty sticker on the box. then i would use a crossover cable to each nic... i think you could just change the workgroup to be the same in the network ID, restart her computer and you will have a private lil network for files to xfer over.. only data files will work, you will have to reinstall progs for them to work (of course you prolly already know that) Good luck with it Fyxx and tell us how it goes

I hadnt thought that there might be a warranty sticker on it, but I do have a couple parallel 100 mb external zip drives. Ive never done the crossover cable thing so maybe I'll think about that too.

    Question

Could you explain what you mean by a crossover cable to each nic? What type of cable and what is a nic? Thx.

A "nic" is short for network interface card" in other words a network card.

Crossover cable refers to a network cable for hooking network card to network card, the wires must be reversed to make this connection.

Read this , it might make it plainer than I am able to,http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00009.asp

I know this sounds stupid but if the files are small and not too numerous, you could email them to herself and then download onto the new machine.

Another thought - if she has "personal" web space with her ISP you could upload them there and FTP them to her new machine. With Cox I have 10 mb storage space for each of my 7 email accounts. Not huge but very handy for file storage.

That wasn't too "techy" was it?
