can RAID act as its own ide channel?
hey yall. my mobo supports raid but i have never used it because i dont have any hdds that are the same. but i am wondering, can raid just be used as an additional ide channel instead of as backup or striping?

I have an Abit KG7-raid and have a single hard drive on it and use it for backup. Works fine. At first I put 2 drives on the channel but there were times when one would get completed messed up. Didn't figure out why I just quit doing that. There is an option in bios to boot from the raid but I have never tried it.
Hope this helps.

Before I created the RAID0 array on this one (KT7-RAID), I had both of my hard drives on the Highpoint controller, one on each channel. That way my two CD drives could each have their own cable on the primary IDE channels
Yes, it will work, but only with hard drives! RAID controllers don't like removable media drives (CDROM, CDRW, ZIP, tape drives, etc). What did a tornado sound like before freight trains were invented?

so for example i could put my cd burner on primary master, my cdrom on secondary master, my 40gb on primary raid channel and my 20gb on my secondary raid channel? would this make things faster?

Yep, you will get better performance because the controllers won't have to wait for one drive to finish reading/writing before it talks to the other one.
IDE controllers can only communicate with one drive on a cable at a time. Since each drive is on its own cable, there is no waiting
Can you say "No buffer under run"
BTW - Don't forget to set the boot order in the bios so that it boots from "ATA100" or "RAID" instead of IDE0. It will still boot up if it's set to IDE0, but it will be a bit quicker if it knows that the boot drive is on the RAID controller
