can anyone here teach me how to use clonecd?? it never works for me, I'm using a plextor 16/10/40A burner to read and write cd's. I also have a toshiba 16x dvd drive i could use to read. Anyway, using the default settings, I always get read errors reading sectors at the beginning of the read when trying to back up my games(SC3k unlimited in this case, i hate scratcing my originals, my D2 is dead from overuse, won't install anymore...) Anyway if i check fast error skip, it lists about 50 or so read errors on sectors... I thought the plextor 16/10/40a was supposed to be one of the best drives available for backing up cd's? can someone help me? |

I have heard of similar problems that occur when you have both the READ & WRITE drives on the same IDE bus. How are your drives configured? If you have both the CD/ROM & DVD/ROM on the same IDE bus then, you might want to switch one with a hard disk drive say like EX.
IDE 0 or 1(whichever is your first IDE bus)
-----------------------------
C: Hard Disk 1
D: DVD/ROM Drive
----------------------------
on the other IDE bus you could have
----------------------------
E: Hard Disk 2
F: CDR/RW drive
----------------------------
I hope this can help you. I use cloneCD all the time and haven't had this problem although i read about it on many other Forums. |

Hmmm... I haven't used CloneCD in a long time. If there is a read speed option you should slow it down. That will help with the errors. Another thing is to let it go until it's finished. Regardless of how many errors you get at first. It may take a long time to read it though. I remember my father-in-law had the same thing happen to him. He just let 'er finish (it took and hour or so just to read) and it ended up burning a perfect copy. Good luck!
(By the way, I use Blind Read/Write. It hasn't come across a CD yet that it couldn't copy.) |

Atomic Rooster is correct.
The CloneCD help file mentions that when reading subchannel data from Plextor cd-rom, Fast Error Skip is enabled. The solution is to reduce the read speed. |

Some of my Cds were giving these type of errors due to scratches on the surface. I rubbed some Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion and now they work perfectly. Colorless shoe polish also works as does wax,
Buried somewhere in this forum is a long thread on how to treat scratched CDs. Maybe someone can post a link. I thing around 2 months old. | |

As for the settings, I use a program called Clony.
This program works in conjunction with CloneCD. You use it to scan a source CD. It detects which copy protection scheme is in place, and recommends the settings to use in CloneCD to ensure a perfect copy.
It can also pass the settings directly to CloneCD and launch the burn for you if you like. How easy is that?
This neat little util can be found here: http://www.clonecd.net/protection.htm

Possibly too late but I had trouble with 2 cds with my new Ricoh 16x10x32 that I really needed to back up (my 3 & 6 yr old children) and came across these instructions for clonecd. They are for an earlier version but most things can be selected - & worked fine.
Create the following directory:
<TempDir>: C:\TEMP\CD
Create a CD-Image using CloneCD with these settings:
Set Read Speed to 1x (176 kByte/s)
Select Read SubChannel Data from Data Tracks
Select Read SubChannel Data from Audio Tracks
Select Fast Error Skip
Set Read Retry to at least 5
Set Error correction to None
UnSelect Don't report bad sectors
UnSelect Intelligent Bad Sector Scanner
When ready burn the CD-Image a CD-R using CloneCD with these settings:
Set Write Speed to any desired speed
Select RAW DAO
Select Don't Repair SubChannel Data
UnSelect Simulate Writing (if available)
Select Burn Proof/Just Link (if available)
unSelect Perform Laser Power Calibration
unSelect Wait until Buffers are full
Select Always close last Session |

CD's with SafeDisc protection are supposed to have read errors (bad sectors stop copying by normal copy CD progs). All the games I have use SafeDisc. At the start of these discs there is about 10000 bad sectors. It takes a long time to copy them.
I use Clony too, it's good, tells you what settings to use. |
