Maxtor and Amset

I've been reading an article about Maxtor Drives that support Silent Store technology. http://www.adriansrojakpot.com/Speed...t_Store_01.htm

The Amset utility mentioned in the article only works on IDE Controllers supposedly. I have the Maxtor ATA100 7200rpm which I believe is the 40 or 45 model. I'm using the Asus A7V KT133 mobo which comes with the ATA100 controller. The Amset program checks for the drive and doesn't find one. Is my drive already optimised since it is connected to the ATA100 controller? Do I need to bother with the amset utility to set it to " /off " or " /fast" ?

amset will only work on the VIA connectors as the driver file does not contain any Promise support.

amset is VERY important. My new 536DX got from 20ms to 15ms by disabling the accoustic management (and it's still silent). While your 40+ won't be benefited as much, it's still a must!

Make sure your drive is listed at maxtor's site or is newer than the ones that are listed. (will check now for you).
