I dont think that is the case. First off you only need 7.8MB/s sustained as I stated earlier, and Super 7 chipsets support either up to 33MB/s or 66MB/s. All IDE cables should work at 33MB/s as far as I know. at 33MB/s this would not be holding back the data rate at all.

Secondly, your board most likely supports ATA/33 and not ATA/66, since thats what the majority of Super 7 boards support. For ATA/33, you need a 40 pin conductor ribbon cable. For ATA/66 and up, you need a 80 pin conductor cable. If you board did support ATA/66, it would most likely be supplied with the cables, since all ATA/66 boards I know of come with at least one 80 pin conductor cable, and that cable would be good for ATA/66, ATA/100, and ATA/133.

Thirdly, assuming your board supports only ATA/33, your harddrive did burst 26MB/s, which pretty much means your cable can almost hit the theoretical 33MB/s limit. Therefore it seems your cable is in working order, 9 years old or not.

Not saying you shouldnt change the cable. I'm just saying I don't think its the problem, and will be completely stupified if it does fix your problem.

The more i think abotu it the mor ei think that what they did was when they bought the new hardrive and put it in, they used the NEW cable, yet the nine year old cd-rom drive(double speed) they left the SAME old ide cable figuring it'd be fine! And because of that, my secondary port has a old IDE cable, and my primary has my HD on it with the faster cable, i am gonna sign0off and see if it says anywhere on the OLD cable to see if it says it's speed.

Folks, there are no such speeds on the IDE cable. Frequencies are much lower than the transfer rate suggests.

Anyhow, 40-wire cables go up to UDMA mode 2 ("33"). For higher modes, you need the later 80-wire cables. And these are all the same for 66, 100 or 133 MB/s - don't get ripped off.

But anyhow ... Gigabyte 5AA uses an ALi chipset. In contradiction of what I said above, if you have the 1543B south bridge on this, you won't get above MWDMA mode 2 (16 MB/s) due to a bug in this chip revision; UDMA mode 2 wasn't working until the 1543C. 1543C-B1 then added UDMA mode 4 for 66 MB/s.
Check what you have.

So have a look at the ALi 1543 southbridge chip - the revisions are written onto it, ready for human eye inspection.
