I do things backward sometimes.
I do "disk cleanup" then "defrag" then boot to DOS for Scandisk
On one machine here, while checking "Directory Structure" it takes an inordinate amount of time. Usually it's just "whiz/bang" through all that stuff then the "surface scan" takes a couple of hours.
The drive in question is an excellent Quantum "AS" 15gb 7200.
Any idea why it hangs so long ?
BTW, scan disk shows NO bad clusters. |

Well, how many hours does it take? I run mine the same way, and the surface scan takes about 2 hours on a WD 20 Gb.

Perhaps the directory structure is so deep and numerous that it takes a lot of time to think about it?

off the subject:
1. clean temp files/hard disk
2. run scandisc
3. defrag
i just do it in that oder because i let scandisc fix the errors so when i defrag i dont have to check the "check disk for errors" option. plus i do them both in safe mode. i agree that you must have a decent amount of files if it takes that long as it doesnt for me with a bigger drive.

And sometimes if the file structure is damaged, and you haven't scandisked it, the defrag thing gets "stuck". Always do as SDW says- that is teh correct sequence.

Checking Directory Structure in "Scandisk" takes about 30-45 min
The whole thing takes 2 hrs more or less
DEFRAG works fine |

| That's too long. Either you have tens of thousands of files and folders or the directory structure is so badly damaged, it probably can't be repaired.
I'd just fdisk and format it.

Im curious why you stated to just fdisk and format it?

There are a few of us out there that find ourselves wiping and reinstalling rather than spend ages trying to fix something. Somthing don't feel right about an installation then wipe it and start again.
I used to have a clean instal each month, got it down to a fine art just a few hours.
Getting mellow as the years roll on have only had 4 or 5 installs so far this year
Griobhta
sorry doc no ideas on a solution |

griobhta has a point i do this regular on a 20gig7200rpm/wd when your running the info as fast as they run it shouldn't take 30-45 minutes for scandisk (standard) that is. on thorough it definitely will take some time . definitly a problem there or your running an old hard drive ....... and i do use maintenance wizard
it does disk cleanup first then scandisk then defrag . if i've installed programs there's always a chance for files being lost and reported in scandisk, i restart then scandisk , other wise the defrag will stop ..... doesn't hurt to re dfisk and reinstall. i keep a back up of all the important stuff on my 40 gig maxtor 5400rpm drive ... works great that away..... |
