I bought a 54x CD-ROM (EPO Technology) in December because I needed one that would work with a desktop sitting on its side.
For most things it works fine, but for some of my daughter's games, it's a disaster. It will read the disc fine initially, start up the game, then the game will freeze and the disc will spin up and down, up and down, as though it can't find the file it needs.
Here are the details:
Dell Optiplex C700, 64MB, Win 98
CD-ROM is only device on secondary IDE channel, set to DMA. I've tried turning DMA off with no improvement. I've tried adjusting the CD-ROM cache up and down. |

Does it only do this on these particular games ???? Can you install any other programs, play music CD's ??? Maybe try slaving it on the primary channel. Re-install the game?? Have you tried another CD ROM ??? I have one that sounds like a B 29 and use it in an older box just for installations. Good luck |

Sounds to me like these discs are dirty or damaged. Which of course isn't too uncommon with kids' stuff. |

I would have thought that except this is a brand new game. It only happens with a couple games, both from Broderbund.
I figured out one work-around. I downloaded a little program from Nero that allows control over the CD speed and just set it to 12x. Everything runs fine now. |

I agree with you. My first instinct was that the actual cd's themselves were faulty. |

Well it's probably a problem with the quality of cd's that the company uses for the games. |

And to make things worse, they install spyware along with the game. |
