| HDD's starting then stoping coming out of sleep running APM
Running 2k w/ APM support (no ACPI because of chipset issues) after the HDD's power down (after 10 min as I have set it) when they are started, they go into a 'loop' pattern of trying to start, then stop over and over. Usually I have to force a reset to get out of it, but sometimes I can get Task Mamanger uip and it seems to keeps the drives up and running.
I know if I set the drives to 'never' would solve the problem, but that isn't what I want to do, nor is it a real 'fix'!
ACPI was changed over to APM because of issues between 2k's ACPI mode and the Ali V chipset. Again this is 2k w/sp3 installed and regular ATA33 IDE drives on the same channel.

That's exactly what I would suggest. I have yet to see anyone claim that allowing drives to spin down saves anything. And it certainly creates headaches of all sorts. |

OTOH, a Compaq Deskpro where I work started acting similarly under W98SE. SMART was initially disabled, but when the drive began to refuse to spin up, I enabled SMART services in the BIOS, for the purpose of testing the hard disk. The hard disk was throwing SMART error 1720 at each bootup for a few days, then the drive began to get very reluctant to spinup. It turned out the drive was actually dying (for real), and CompaQ just replaced it. Maxtor 40Gig, 18 months old, 3 year warranty. YMMV.

Setting it to never doesn't solve the problem. If the drive spins hour after hour without use, why is that better?
SMART monitoring isn't a option here.
This is a 4 1/2 year old MB with a 3 year old bios.
Ali V chipset
Also, notice that this is APM, NOT ACPI! |

Um, no, I was referring to the drive failing angle. SMART just gave me the incentive to perform deeper tests on the drive, and many folks leave SMART disabled. Whether your mobo does or does not read SMART is irrelevant - the drive might still be dying! After all, you said: and IIRC, ATA33 has not been current for a couple years. YMMV. |

Works fine in ME on the other bootable drive!
Update...........
I have formatted and re-installed 2k in the 'standard pc' mode and enabled the NT /Legecy support. On a shutdown I see a stop message (not long enough to read it though) when it should be powering off and then it reboots.
Again this is a shutdown, not a restart.

Yes, but, with I beleive ACPI (if that is the default). No special install here. |

Weird. Sorry, the only thing I can suggest is maybe a patch issue. |
