how do they speak different? all standard IDE compatable devices come with shunt selects for: MASTER, SLAVE, and CABLE SELECT. Why should they talk differently? they are organized.

well i guess if you do it by the pci card it is (:-\ oh well) but i have never run into a problem on the Mboard's controllers, except when those certain cd-rom manufacturers llllloooovvveee FOR THEIR DEVICE TO BE NON-PNP ~GRR~ |

and a
secondary ide controller [dual fifo]
does that mean anything? | Well all that means is that you have what most motherboards have. Most have 2 channels, primary and secondary each of which can take 2 devices- so a total of 4 drives. The bus master is just part of the electronics that lets the your drives talk to everything else.
Only if you have one of those built in Raid motherboards will you have more ide channels.
Only if you have a built in RAID on the board will you have more.
Why not SCSI asks JUDOLIZARD, a bit of an overkill when it comes to the amount of dosh it costs not only will the controller cost more but the drives are far more expensive too and you probably don't really need them.
Problems with CDRom/DVD devices on the same channel as HDD is that CDRom and DVD drives often have problems with DMA and and to cut short a long story this can slow down a hard disk on the same channel.
Also not sure how much of an increase you will get from getting a card. An ATA100 drive connected to ATA66 probably will not show too much of a speed difference if you board is ATA33 then maybe you will see a difference. Don't rightly know Otheos is the one to ask.
Also using an ATA66 drive on an ATA33 channel causes a few problems as you have to download a util from HDD makers site to set the drive to ATA33 again don't know if this is a problem for other ATA combinations.

PS sorry if it's a bit verbose |
