My CD drives are not accessable in WIN2K!!!!

Hi all
My problem is that i can't access any CD (data or music..) while it is spinning in my drive when i'm in win2k.. any one of them (Compaq-slave, Plextor-master) ...

I can access the CD in win98 which means i have no cable connection problems ...

In WIN2K it gives me the following message when i double click the CD icon in My Computer :
"The disk in drive H is not formatted, do you want to format it now ?" if i press OK it will say the disk can't be formatted ...

BTW, Transfer mode is DMA and i have the latest VIA drivers.. the problem happened few days ago .. Too odd, but i can burn using Nero in win2k then i can't open the CD in explorer ??

Help, any suggestions?
Regards

Well no cable problem so the problem is software related.
You might have checked it already, but is there something wrong in devicemanager. Rightclick on your CD icon go to properties>hardware check if everything is correct.
Check if windows/system32/drivers/cdrom.sys is there or it could be corrupted.
Plextor needs this drivers too:
system32\drivers\imapi.sys
system32\drivers\redbook.sys
system32\storpop.dll

Just a shot in the dark:
copy wnaspi32.dll from nerodir to windows/system folder

Hope this helps. Otherwise we have to wait until the US pro's wake up

Hi DutchMaster

Well, i checked all the files you mentioned and they were there except for the imapi.sys which was missed ... should it be so important?.. but if it is important for the Plextor .. how about the Compaq drive?

I Provided a shot for the Device Manager, Secondary IDE channel and My Computer .. there is nothing wrong as i checked many times in there ... all devices is working properly as it was stated ...

Regards

I have had this same problem in WinME (yuck!!!) from time to time. It has always been a driver that was "incorrectly or not installed" for the Secondary IDE controller. I really have no idea as to the root of the problem, but everytime that happened I just reinstalled the driver for that controller and everything would work fine again for a while. I haven't had the problem again for quite some time, so maybe it finally worked itself out!

Ribb

Edit

Well, you posted that before I got to it. Sorry for the redundant info!!

Only the Plextor uses imapi.sys in my setup. I have the same Plextor
Only differance that I have XP pro. But I don't think it would make a differance.
I could mail you imapi.sys if you need it

[EDIT]
Uploaded it: imapi.zip
[/EDIT]

There is a new Firmware for the Plextor 1.04v .. i upgraded .. then i upgraded IDE devices manually .. "the disk is not formatted" message still here ... ?.. even if there is no CD in the drive .. when i double click it, a popup with the same message appears ...

Is there a way to detect or examine a SYS file to see if it is corrupted or working fine ?...

I don't think that file (imapi.sys) is the problem as the Compaq drive is also not working ....

Regards

Ai both, yeah the compaq probably doesn't need that one.
Well uploaded all drivers.
Be sure to backup the old ones. These where shipped with XP pro but I don't think it will differ with 2k. But you better play it save.
At least you could check differance in filesize or something like that.

Thanx Dutch ..
The new drivers you have sent were a lottle bit different in size than the ones i have now ... i backed up then changed them all and added the imapi.sys to its root .. and still the exact same problem ...

I hope for some suggestions that might save my time reinstalling win2k ...

Regards and thanx for the files dude

You got me stuck there. You're sure the filesize isn't equally increased? Like say a virus which has added 1KB to it or something? Try a scandisk to search for any filecorruptions.
my Plextor is set to Multiword DMA 2 BTW
and my DVD-ROM to PIO.
You could try the VIA IDEtool. Maybe that will work.

Just some ideas, but I don't know a concrete solution
