Maxtor ATA Card with problems

I sure am having trouble getting this card to work .The card is sold by Maxtor but says Promise on the card itself. I am installing it in an ABIT BX6 v2 motherboard that only has UDMA 33 support. It installs as a SCSI device and I have set the BIOS to boot to SCSI. I then get a message stating "primary hard drive failure". If I reconnect to onboard IDE the drive works just fine and the card searches for a drive but will not load the card BIOS because there isn't a device attached. I sure could use some ideas to check out as I would like to get this thing to work.

I got the exact same card free with a 40GB Maxtor drive and haven't used it for precisely the same reasons. Loaded the drivers also which came on a floppy with the card. But it doesn't work. Except when you have only one drive connected to it and none on the MB itself. The moment you put any drive on the EIDE on the MB, it just don't work.

Mine's made by Promise too.

I bought mine and got the money back as a rebate so I am not out any cash.I kept the CD-ROM attached to the motherboard. I also disabled IDE 1 in the hope that it would then boot to the SCSI. No go. It does say in the documentation that the motherboard must be PCI 2.1 compliant and support bus mastering. I am gonna check on the compliant part. In Device Manager there is a tab for inserting some form of instructions but I haven't figured out if I need to do something there or not.
