I figure a way to allow people in is to have them take some sort of test. This will filter out the people who aren't too fervent about participating to begin with. Then those who take the test (morality issues, common sense stuff, etc.) and pass could be allowed to view the forum.
Of course, the easiest place to lie about one's age is on the internet, and even if one is completely honest with one's age, one can always be much more immature than one's age. On the other hand, one who is younger may very well be mature well beyond one's years.
If that doesn't work, older, verified, established, and revered members can "nominate" other, newer members for the forum, so to speak. That is if the member wants to visit the forum in the first place.
As far as the pay-per-view aspect, I'm against that as I've always been. The internet is free (aside from the ISP part) and should stay that way. Even if the cost was nominal to support an adult forum, I wouldn't contribute.
Just my $0.02. |

Essentially, using a credit card for verification and minimal regular payment is about the only way we can effectively stop minors from accessing such a section.
Take note, this is a personal interest question at this point, not a specific planned project for TechIMO.
Robert Richmond | Tried before, one guy becomes a group they expand, The guy with the largest $ group takes over and ends up dictating the terms to the forum owners. When $ are involved things change and not for the better (give you a link to the future of Techimo if you go down that path,( give you more than just one or ten ). Brandon suggests a separate forum for adult+ serious talk I think, we put aside jks and all of that. I truly think it could work well if it is maintained by member vote.
Brandon has the core of a good idea in this forum, if a fee is required not to bad, but I really think a heavy majority vote will work. |

Not 18+ - Make it 40+. That'll cut down on the brain-dead even more. Of course, then the "maroons" will go and change their birth year in the profile... Show me a good, non invasive verification method for age and I'm in.

.bh. | Like I said, members should be judged among their peers. Mods could allow people who they're certain of (age and maturity-wise) to access the forum. Something else, I suppose, would have to be devised to approve lesser known and new members.
Maybe only established members should be allowed to join after all? Who knows? The whole concept is riddled with possible flaws, but the bottom line is mods always have the innate power to ban when deemed necessary. |

| Yeah, that is the problem. There is no decent verification model other than a subscription model. For those thinking a subscription model would somehow be a cash generating mechanism for the site, think again. Best believe a few member subscriptions are definitely not going to even put a dent in our hosting and administrative costs.
Also, everyone please remember I am speaking hypothetically. None of this discussion will have an impact on operations at TechIMO beyond possible proposals I might submit to Scott for future site ideas.

.bh. | TIMO equivalent of a retirement home
Personally I like the forum being open to all, we could have a forum for members with 100+ post or something but most of the posts in the community are from establish members anyway. |
