Thread: PC Builds

No, this thread doesnt want a whole new forum.
All its asking for is one category. For example, here we have General Tech Discussion, Applications and Operating Systems, Technical Support etc. We are trying to get one that says something along the lines of New builds and Upgrades. Not a Whole new forum.

How about the PC modification category. I've posted stuff there before.

EDIT: There are a lot of threads in that category about new builds, suggestions, etc.

May 21st, 2006, 05:13 PM #44Well here's my point as to why I personally don't see a need for this:Members who specialize in upgrading and building can stick around that forum insted of browsing endlessly in the 'General Tech' forum....
Pc Hardware and Tech is divided into several sub categories already. If you are just wanting to upgrade your mobo, cpu or vid card there are already sub forums specifically for that purpose. There really should be no reason for someone looking for mobo upgrade advice to be in the "general tech" forum nor should they be browsing the vid card forum.
Now that said if you did create an entire new forum say "New builds and Upgrades only" you are then going to need to create at least three more new sub forums. Cpu, Mobo and vid card. That makes it all pretty redundant if you ask me. Now I could understand the possibility of a sub forum within PC Hardware and Tech just for new builds or a rate my build type thing.
IMO alot of people would find it easier to get answers if everyone would do the following
1. the "search" feature was used
2. people would create proper thread titles
3. people would post issues in the appropriate forum to begin with!!

Sounds like a nice idea.
As long as everything still shows up in the recent discussion areas, I'm cool. I basically surf through those when I'm here...Intel Core i7-860 OCed to 4.0GHz | ASUS P7P55D-E | G.Skill 8192MB (4x2048MB) RAM | MSI GTX 280 | 2x Seagate 160GB 7200.11 RAID 0

By putting these to issues on one place, they dont only click together, its also easier for others to look at members suggestions to specific motherboards and other perpherials too. Also, by having them both together, it will utilize the sub-forum very well.
I doubt anyone uses the search feature, and if they did they would probaly pull out a relavant thread dated back to 2003. Every posts suggestions to those open currently, they dont really look for threads to post on.

If it doesnt belong in a sub-forum, guess where it goes? Thats right, its thrown in the 'General Tech'. Looking in there now, there are some threads which concern stuff about upgrades and new builds.

What those people dont understand is that, if it was a thread concerning a mobo, those few in the mobo sections could help out more than the many in the general tech section. This is obviously because, those in the mobo section know about mobo's so they choose to post to threads concerning mobo's. Do you see what i mean?
This will be similar of we had a new builds sub-forum...

May 21st, 2006, 10:54 PM #47no, the ideas im thinking of run along the lines of some of these current stickies, those help out old members and new ones

ykno links to sites n forums like silent pc review or laptop forums, etc the kind of stuff we tend to post regularly
i want to show an example but that would better be pulled off on making an entirely new thread which im going to avoid doing, altho it would be able to convey better what im trying to explain
there are more than enough people here w/tons of referance sites bookmarked that could help alot of others, it wouldnt be too difficult to pull off, but requires somebody able to seriously maintain the thread like those that have earned sticky status or the bench threads etc
that all seemed about as gargled as the thought that created the thread topic, im too busy trying to write out some other detail oriented well thought out stuff to go over n fix that all up so i hope the idea wasnt too difficult to pick up on...

Oh right I see...
But dont you think who ever wanted a link of a manufacturer, wouldnt they just google it? i see its useful, but members may not know about it and they might just bring up an extra thing or two if they'd search it, its the norm. Google this and Google that...
-
May 22nd, 2006, 02:45 AM #51YES google helps alot but when ur noob n dont know what exact terms to search for then its not so easy, theres plenty of stuff that could be put into this that would help the noobs as well as vets

Well IMO we're just showing how much stuff we could already put in a new forum, a subcategory would IMO because if it does expand massively then it can be turned into a proper forum...although i don't expect that will happen to be honest with you.
IMO a subcategory "new builds", or maybe something to do with upgrades also(although there are already forums for those really), that way we can have a few stickies like "manufacturer links", "retailer links", "recomended builds" and possibly one or two more.
Hopefully this will happen, im definatly putting this link in my sig!

I think that would be a great idea to have those forums here.
The General Tech forum has always seemed like a dumping ground to me. (I'm guilty of it as well).--- Standby to receive our transmission ---

June 13th, 2006, 05:25 PM #55Absolutely. What we want is a forum for us to be able to put new builds into it, so often we upgrade more than one thing, and its not really a mod IMO, the mods forums tends to be more about modding cases etc, we want a complete PC's upgrades/builds forum just like the CPU forums or whatever so we can find it easily and get some help going.
