Another Case contest
i would like to see another case contest where you show us the case and we tell you what we would do with it. I had a wonderful idea but i was exactly a year too late to enter (6/26/05) Nemesis case contest.
I had this done too...
This case would keep my g/fs hamster quite comfortable. Heres what I plan to do with it.
First I would seal up all the edges with silicon gel. Then I would create a raised section on the bottom of the case and line that with newspaper, this way the hamster byproduct wouldnt be walked in, rather it would fall under the cage at the bottom. I would then attach a mesh grill to the side fan so that her hamster wouldnt get its little feetsies caught in the rotary, silicon coat all the wires so that she couldnt chew through them. I would then build her hamster wheel roughly where the cpu fan would be, it would resemble a Zalman 120mm copper cpu fan. I would print out an exact photo of a motherboard to place behind that so it looks real. Then Ill fabricate a fake graphics card out of wood, specially fitted to look like an ATI x1900xt which the hamster could climb onto to get into the wheel. The RAM would actually be a mounting area for long wooden chewsticks for the hamster to nibble on, but still keeping the look of actual ram sticks. I would build an actual working CD drive into the case but not for cds, the drive would be modified as a slide out food tray, this would make it easy to feed the hamster instead of opeing the side panel all the time. The front door of the case would be fitted with a lock so the hamster couldnt push the door open, plus it would make for easy access to petting the hamster or taking it out to play.
Below is a design i sketched up in photoshop about how it would work...
its a basic quick sketch, ill incorperate tubes to get around since its multilevel and the 120mm exhaust fan will probably be converted to more hamster area extension such as an external maze or other area, whatever my g/f decides on.
Oh and BTW, the powersupply would be plugged in and the fans would be there to keep the hamster cool and keep the smell dispersed. i will work on wire protection and such designs if i get the case = )Mild Computer Repairman By Day

yeah thats what the hamster wheel is and chew sticks are for...
and the food r/water drive was for.
what did you think this was?
The bottom will be woodchips and such covering the mesh floor. The hamster poopies are small and will fall between the mesh so she isnt walking in her own business.Last edited by Thread_Necro; June 24th, 2006 at 02:58 PM.

But, seriously, we should have another contest. Hardware related, case, Power Supply, CPU, RAM, Hard Drive, etc. And, not one of those FAD ones. This should be open to all members. Or, have a contest for FAD, and another for non-FAD members. Or, the same contest, but different parts.

June 25th, 2006, 04:25 PM #9I think that it should be towards Fad Type members, not just ordinary members, because why should we not give to techimo?

Hahaha i like this. Sign me up. Make sure you have some uber fans running or your hamster will be deep fried. Might actually build a hamster case like that. All i need is a hamster.
nice idea.

Unless I missed some huge news, Find-a-Drug has been over for several months.
Not sure about any official TechIMO contests right now, but I might be able to personally fund some forum contests for affordable hardware like heatsink coolers, drive enclosures, power supplies, and similar products if there is any real interest.

Even those would be cool. And, if you do fund them, you would have my personal thanks.
It has been a while for a contest, hasn't it?

We have not had a contest since 2005. Ideally, it would be easiest to have a corporate sponsor for contests, but that creates additional problems for the editorial side of operations. Additionally, we have to deal with the legalities of such contests - disclaimers, limitations, etc. I also do not like having to exclude staff members (moderators, contributing editors, etc.), which we have to do when running officially sponsored contests.
Instead, I will look into arranging some informal forum contests open to most everyone at TechIMO - within reason, not sure about international shipments since I would be funding these contests on my own dime. Some community sites use contests mainly to attract more members, but I am more interested in existing TechIMO members having fun playing amusing forum games to compete for prizes instead of trying to increase user counts and web statistics.
I will start putting together a list of possible prizes. BTW, before anyone asks, I do not take prize requests.

So, will non-US folks be able to play, Rob?

Not that I play games, mind, but just asking....
Cheers

Not sure Mick. Mostly it will come down to shipping costs.
Might have to work it a per contest basis. Paying $35 to ship a $25 prize to AU might be a little extreme, likewise shipping a heavy ATX case overseas might not be cost effective either.

What would the "games" consist of?
Essays, like for the case contest?

OK.
I don't suppose we have a timeframe here, do we? Last question.

Honest answer... when I get to it, which could range from a few days to a few weeks. I usually have a low-priority backlog at TechIMO. ResellerRatings takes a good portion of my time these days, so I prioritize TechIMO projects.
