that is the stupidest Idea I've heard, don't blame the spammers, but blame the Admin? WTF?
also, email verification? WTF? who wants to load up their inboxes with verification links, for every single post, edit and what ever else on a forums as active as this one?

Here's an example. This is Jonathan Taufer Aka Willpower101
I just signed up with this account and stared posting, guess what email I'm using? testaccount42@randomfakeemail.com
Yes, blame your admins, have them fix it. And stop cussing at me, if don't understand what i'm talking about then it's a good idea not to post and make a fool out of yourself.
I though this forum was supposed to be full of tech people? |

Did you see how easy that was for me? Go ahead try it.
Seriously ShyguyXPC are you telling me you've NEVER signed up to a forum that required verification when you sign up? And you're telling me that a database of 5 security questions is more secure than using the captcha system? |

And if I hit the button your account is banned. As well as your other accounts, hope you used a proxy to sign up. Oh wait you didn't. Request noted for email verification but please note that it is not a magic bullet. Spammers have hundreds of email accounts to use and even bots can complete an email verification. It just makes it a little harder for the people who spam manually. |

I was using the proxy justuse.info because my willpower102 and willpower103 accounts that I tried to successively make did not work. But it seems it's not working anymore as per my bellsouth IP on the right.
Of course I understand that you can ban my account. Good for you? What do you achieve by either threatening to ban my account/ip or actually banning it? (besides some sort of personal satifaction for getting rid of someone who actually has something of substance to say)
I would have suggested this information anyway, but the reason I am so adamant about it is because my original account was banned for a "spam attack" (as if I somehow did that) when I comprised a decent size, well thought out post of advice in response to a thread about logging your folding time. (and I know two people with cancer so I really support folding.)
So my point is that though spam is always a problem, there are several prohibitive measures that this forum is not implementing, and as such have ended up banning a quality member instead of a culprit. (and even though this makes me livid, I'm trying to being moderately calm in my posts) |

(besides some sort of personal satifaction for getting rid of someone who actually has something of substance to say) | If i was looking for cheap thrills I would have done that. I guess you are used to mods who power trip or something. If you like arguing with those people please go else where to find them. I personally find it boring. The point of me telling you was so that you might realize that the bans in use also ban via IP. So we snag a lot of the people and bots when they return. Sure another proxy and they are back but its the same with email. Another email account and suddenly the issue is back. Quote:

Additional information was also posted in response to said suggestion. Maybe you can feel better that someone at least took the time to listen and respond to you directly.
Overall we do not get a ridiculous amount of spam accounts. What we get is a high volume of spam from a single account most of the time. Not always the case. So most of our work involves getting rid of the one who made it in. If we make it too difficult to sign up some people may never make it online to post
Have a wonderful day! |
