Microsoft Athlon Processor Driver

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 306458

AMD PowerNow! Functionality May Require a Driver for AMD Mobile Athlon 4 and Duron Processors with Windows XP

SYMPTOMS
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) offers PowerNow! technology on AMD mobile Athlon 4 and mobile Duron processors. The PowerNow! technology adjusts the processor's performance and power consumption by dynamically adjusting the processor's operating frequency and voltage. Windows XP requires an additional driver (the Amdk7.sys driver) to enable the AMD PowerNow! functionality. Laptop computers that are based on these mobile AMD processors and are shipped with Windows XP installed by the manufacturer are likely to have this driver already installed. If you reinstall Windows XP, you must also install the Amdk7.sys driver to use the PowerNow! technology.
CAUSE
The Amdk7.sys driver is necessary to enable Windows XP support for AMD PowerNow! technology on computers that use a mobile Athlon 4 or mobile Duron processor.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP.

Microsoft Direct3D Performance Update

This article discusses the issues currently affecting Direct3D graphics performance.

There are several issues currently affecting Direct3D graphics performance; these are:

AGP miniport driver updates for AMD motherboards
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 AGP patch for AMD Athlon™ and Duron™ platforms
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 graphics card issues
Microsoft® DirectX® issues
IHV driver issues
For maximum performance and stability, it is highly recommended that users with AMD-based processor systems acquire the appropriate AGP miniport driver updates if needed.

Users with motherboards that implement the AMD-751 Systems Controller as part of the AMD-750 chipset may download the updated driver from the AMD Web site at http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/bin.

Users with motherboards that implement Via chipsets may download the updated driver from the Via Web site at http://www.viatech.com/drivers/index.htm. Determination of chipsets implemented by specific motherboards may be made at the motherboard manufacturer’s Web site or at the "AMD Athlon Recommended Processor" page at http://www1.amd.com/athlon/mbl. These updates apply to Windows 2000 and Windows 95 through Windows 98, Second Edition.

Users running Windows 2000 on AMD Athlon™- and Duron™-based platforms should download the AGP patch from the AMD Web site at http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athl...2k_patch.html.

The combination of the DirectX 8.0 runtime, new DX 8.0 drivers, and SP1 of Windows 2000 should yield the best performance on Windows 2000 systems. While other operating systems had fewer performance restrictions, installing DirectX 8.0 will provide the best performance

unnamed, you're in the wrong forum. If you want help, go to (say) General Tech Discussion under PC Hardware and Tech, and post your question there. Use the "New Thread" button, and be as clear and concise as possible in your thread title. "Help!" is much less likely to get you an answer than "Can't find my CD-ROM drive in 'My Computer' folder."
