type this

echo %PATH%

echo doesn't work either?

cd c:\windows\system32

then try again

I have a feeling your PATH env variable is hosed.

Which Operating System are you running?

What commands are you attempting to run?

If Win XP and you click on START->RUN are you using the correct CMD or the incorrect Command to get to the DOS prompt?

FWIW, I believe the cmd prompt is not the same as true DOS mode..

What Steve R Jones asked, "What commands are you wanting to run"???

I think vass has it. He set the path to point to his java folder...

you need to put a ';' between entries in order to add multiple entries. When you deleted your old entry, you deleted the path to all your commands.

set path to

Code:
 C:\Windows\System32\;C:\Windows\;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem
then put a ; and add your java path in if you still want it.

If only you could open a command line in the directory after you are in the directory.

you don't have to be in the command line to set your path environment. You do it from control panel -> system -> advanced -> environment variables.
