Taking XP from one computer to the other...?

I have a Vista laptop and an old XP desktop, is it possible to use the desktop to get XP on my laptop in any way...? A good guide would be very useful. Thanks.

Does your XP machine have a License sticker?

In theory, if you have a retail copy or a purchased computer. As long as you remove XP from the current machine and put it on another, you shouldnt be violating your license but it may ask you to validate your license. Without removing the XP install from the desktop, this would be illegal.

Either way, since XP will no longer be available without corporate workarounds in June. I would recommend you buck up and get used to Vista because its going to be the standard for the next couple of years. Even businesses are going to be limited on their OS options as the months go by.

XP will continue to be available long after June despite all the hype.

I've thought about taking XP from the desktop, if it's possible, and then give the PC to a foundation here in Norway (they take old PCs). That way I won't have XP on the desktop anymore, is it legal to then put it on the laptop? If so, how do I do it?

Vista is sh*t, it won't even play my old games from the 90s. I'll do anything (as long as it's legal) to get XP on the laptop...

If you have the disk and product key code, sure! Now if you are wanting to transfer the contens of the desktop to the laptop, well that's going to be tricker. First, you need to make a clone of the desktop's hard drive. Then, on the laptop your probably going to see Windows pop up a message stating that the Windows product activation is invalid. You can correct this by going through the steps there and just click "change key" and enter the one you have. Believe I have this right. Did this in VMware.

You may want to erase the hard drive before giving it away. It may take more than 12 hours depending on speed and size of hard drive.

XP service pack 3 is now out. Win 2000 had a total of 5 service packs.
I will not be changing over to Vista for at least a year, I think it is still too buggy and I do not have the time to allow M$ to use my computers as a testing station.

I really wish I had the time to learn linux but duty calls literally as I head to work to clean up a mess.

You are going to need the sticker with the license. I would imagine that attempting to remove the sticker may lead to it showing void on it. So your probably going to want to keep the old computer around.
