| AMD vs Intel..MHz difference???
I know its been up on here before somewhere but cannot find the thread. Can someone explain or link me to the thread that gave the difference/reasons why lower MHz AMD cpu's perform up to higher clocked Intel cpu's? I had a co-worker today ask me the specifics and could not recall off hand(i want the technical juice) |

they have some good analogies as well as technical info.
in short, the Athlon does more work per clock cycle, whereas the P4 does less work at a higher clock frequency. |

It all boils down to instructions per clock cycle.
Basicly AMD does more instructions (read commands, processes, or just plain stuff) per clock cycle than intel.
There is an equation that is essentialy (Insturctions per clock cycle) * (MHZ) = preformance
AMD's lack of MHZ is more than made up for by their high IPC, while Intel's low IPC is not made up for by their high MHZ.
Intel wants (and has convinced) consumers that it's all about MHZ, while in truth it's all about the combonation of MHZ and IPC when it comes to determine the overall performance power of a chip.
Hope this helps a little more, I know it isn't too technical, but it's at least an idea.

See article at andantech. They just compared XP2000+ to P4 2.2 gig. Appeared to me they come out evenly matched. But the XP runs at a little over 1.6gig compared to 2.2 for the P4. I believe the price in the P4 is quite abit higher to. I use a 1800+ here (also other kinds), really when you get above about 500meg in speed, with just the normal stuff I do, the 500meg one does as much as the 1600meg one (seem's like).
