There are 3 versions. Standard, Pro and professional I think. Standard is a limited version of the codec, doesn't do *everyting* that the full version does. Pro is the full version and it is also free, but it installs GAIN, an ad program. This program randomly shows you ads while you're online. The third version is $30 and is full with no ads. Kinda sucky.

One perfectly legal way around this is to install ZA or tiny personal firewall. The first time GAIN tried to access the internet, configure a rule that doesn't allow it to, bam no popups

yeah, but you'll have a spyware program on your system... so there's a downside...

If you're just ripping DVD's you don't need the Pro version (according to divx.com)

Haven't experimented with Divx v5 much yet. You may want to check out XviD as well, as this new MPEG-4 codec will be GPL (free source + binaries) when completed. The current revision already exceeds the capabilities of Divx v4 in many areas.

Just tried to rip a dvd with the pro version and I had already removed the spyware, well its not letting me, so I'm gonna use the standard version.
