Sony's Rootkit software

Im curious what the tech public thinks about this sony rootkit fiasco...I cannot believe a company ever thought it could get away with this= destruction of property, lying, giving open door to virus writers.. ...it seriously ticks me off considering most of the population (which keeps them in business) are honest law abiding people. These big companies are like megalomaniacs. What do you guys think?

I think they should be put out of business, but the only real pressure we have is to boycott their CD's.

The Sony code modifies Windows so you can't tell it's there, a process called "cloaking" in the hacker world. It acts as spyware, surreptitiously sending information about you to Sony. And it can't be removed; trying to get rid of it damages Windows.

Sony claimed the rootkit didn't phone home when it did. On Nov. 4, Thomas Hesse, Sony BMG's president of global digital business, demonstrated the company's disdain for its customers when he said, "Most people don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?" in an NPR interview. Even Sony's apology only admits that its rootkit "includes a feature that may make a user's computer susceptible to a virus written specifically to target the software."

This all just goes to show that the big companies i.e sony, think that they are so superior to everything and anything else that they think no one will ever find this tricky little gift to the rippers of the world. Which in fact as we all know by now is complete and utter bull$h**.

Now we have this whole thing about, well now we have hackers using this thing to their advantage. Which just contributes to the stupidity of sony. I personally think the only thing they ever did right was the ps2. (ps3 yet to be determined, personally i think there will be some major thing like exploding gpu's or something)

But even the ps2 has many faults, the slim line was an improvement but not much, now they have the external psu's melting the inards of the ps2, and they have a non-mandatory recall.

These guys really know what they're doing, maybe in a couple decades th ey will contribute to a space exploration mission and have a faulty psu on that which in turn melts the wiring to the controls for the crapper. Making those poor astronauts have to hold it for the duration of the mission, causing exploding kidneys.
