can anyone tell me how this works? and can you give me a summary i am not going to copy but going to get a basic idea of it.
Be Your Own Battery
A backpack converts human motion into electricity
TODAY'S TECH-SAVYY SOLDIER with night vision goggles, radio and wearable computer is primarily battery-powered. Now biologist Lawrence Rome of the University of Pennsylvania has found a far better way to recharge the 21st century soilder-and civilian, for that matter. The solution, funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and the National Institutes of Health, is backpack that harnesses the up-and-down motion of the hips when a person walks and converts the mechanical energy into electricity. "I pulled my 30-year old external-frame backpack out of my closet," Rome says. Weighting the pack, he set it on springs so that it would bounce with each step and then coupled it to a generator. Carrying weights of between 44 and 84 pounds, testers generated up to 7.4 watts, more than enough to directly power a full flight of electronic gear or to recharge batteries as they die. While Rome anticipates a two -to three-year review process by the Navy, he's founded a company, Lightning Packs, to bring his invention to emergency workers within a year.
(There's already interest from the New York City fire department.) But the biggest customer may be the average camper: Setting the load on springs not only generates electricity, it makes the pack more ergonmic.-Jonothan Keats (popular science december issue)
{INSIDE THE POWER PACK}
BACKPACK Attached to an aluminum load plate, a nylon sack is free to slide up to three inches vertically along a pair of steel runner screwed to a five-ound aluminum pack frame. The load plate can accommodate up to 84 pounds of gear.
GEAR SYSTEM A steel-toothed rack extends several inches above the sack to meeth the brass pinion gear of a motor that's attached to the top of the pack frame. Three steel springs suspend the load plate from above, and one spring secures it from below. This setup optimizes the vertical movement of the sack on the wearer's back.
MOTOR A geared DC motor spins at up to 5,000 rpm as the toothed rack slides up and down, producing as much as 7.4 watts of power, suitable for charging batteries or directly running electronic equpiment.
(That is the diagram of the picture of a backpack looking squares shape )
while your at it can you give me you opinion about this? |

the rules xelnanga
Members will notice immediately that TechIMO's forums are unlike many other message boards on the Internet. One of our policies has always been to treat each other with respect and dignity, and we do not allow obscene language. These policies for conduct are our top concern and are actively enforced.
for you

i dont know how to quote so i am just going to say it from the techimo FAQ. | I think you are intepreting the rules wrong. I never said anything of obscene languages, and i said that you should do it urself because its only 3~5 paragraphs. And to quote u have to do this;
1. type "[ quote]"*
2. type ur stuff (w/e)
3. then type "[ /quote]"*
If you want to add in bold, italic or underlined letters u can click on the top buttons for help
Besides, what happend to your first account?
*I had to add in one space, to stop the techimo to recognize it as an actual quote. when you actually do it, you would not add in the blank space like I did
edit: When I searched if bum was a rather obscene language, it came out as: Quote:
Chiefly British Slang
The buttocks.
| on http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=bum
so I apologize for any inconveniences!

The rack moves up and down as the person moves. As the rack moves, it turns a gear, which turns a standard generator. The generator delivers power each time the gear turns.
As for an opinion, 7.4 watts is not much power.
volts x amps = watts
The voltage is not indicated, but for all intents and purposes, this system would provide about the same level of power as two quality NiMH rechargable AA batteries. Direct power would be limited at best, but it could be used to maintain and recharge batteries. |

| It is essentially free energy, but the energy amount being produced is so small that it offers no direct benefit to much of anyone in my opinion. Replacing the bulk mechanical aspects of the proposed platform with a small solar cell would increase efficiency and decrease weight. |
