console or upgrade my computer...need advice please

Hello all. I am not sure if I should buy a console or upgrade my computer for gaming. I know we now have our first legitimate consoles that are mini computers particularly the Xbox. Will consoles continue to evolve and replace the pc as the better alternative? With consoles changing every 2-3 years will they be able to keep up with the changes in pcs and offer a better and cheaper gaming experience versus the pc? I am mainly concerned at excellent visual quality(no aliasing like i ALWAYS see in PC games, excellent MINIMUM frame rate(nothing under 60FPS), and a great price and multiplayer options(multiple tv's, etc..) I do like real time strategy games too on the PC. Any ideas on what I should pick?

PC specs are: AMD 1 gig athlon cpu
    ASUS A7V133 Socket A mobo w/ KT133A chipset
    ATI RADEON 8500 vid card
    512 megs of SDRAM
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI sound card
    Windows 98 SE

You PC now can do any new heavy game in the market without problem .. also it will live few more years without the real need of upgrade ...IMO

So if you have the cash .. get a PS2 or Xbox ...

    Regards

Save your cash, & build a home LAN.
You'll have fun & learn something in the process.
IMHO, consoles are for sheeple, and kids.

    Don't buy a console.

Don't buy the XBOX yet, since this is the first console for msoft
Wait for XBOX2, by then they will have more game developer on their side
Until then, stick with your PC

IMO, it's better to have a multi-functional machine like the PCs. you just can do anything with it. from gaming to learning..

I have to agree with cadd besides the fact it is alot more fun playing against an opponent when you don't have to share the screen. I play alot of racing games and can't stand when you have split the screen in half to race head to head. It doesn't allow you to really focus on your race.(especialy when the other guy wreck's and you about bust a gut lol)

an overlooked option is to use ur pc as a console, run video out to ur tv and get a controller, even tony hawk is just like on the console, but then again if you always have alot of friends over, id pick the console, they got that certain party feel to them

Do they usually make a PC version for console games, or just the real popular ones? I saw a couple of xbox games I might like.

Wow...I couldn't imagine buying a console if I was on a limited budget and only had one computer.

If you had 8 or 10 computers on a nice network, I'd say spend the money on more computers or upgrades(big LCD...ooohhhh yeah! DVD burner...yummy! Dual processor Athlon system...woohoo!). But I guess at some point the console makes sense. Can't say I've ever gotten to that point though.

I personally prefer PC games anyway.

about cadd's reference to sheeple.. I believe that is a combination of Sheep and people.. implying a cynical comment about following the masses..

and I would say PC all the way but yes the console does have that party atmosphere when you play with a few friends over. but have you ever been to a lan party?? now that is truly fun!!!! and that is even more of a party atmosphere

and yet again this is all IMO

It is truely all about preference. If you are familiar with the XBox specs, then you know it is using a GeForce 3 graphics accelarator. IMHO I have experianced better response from my new system than any counsel could possible give me. If you like the feel of the gaming counsels over a pc...go for it. As for me? My pc will out perform any counsel currently on the market......

$200 for an xbox is well worth it. I just bought a dreamcast, and I'm having loads of fun with it. For the first time in history, console gaming can compare to PC gaming.

It's sounds like your PC is still quite good. You should be able to run almost anything that comes out for the next 2 years. No need to upgrade.
