You know, something about this article just doesn't quite sound right... it sounds like someone just made the whole thing up. I mean think about it... all the information about hackers in this article is stuff we all knew already anyhow. Anyone (or nearly anyone) of us could have written that article ourselves. And the handle "monkeyboy"?? How original is that? The three items the "hacker" says will keep him from hacking... that's all stuff most of us knew to do already. Quote: |
Okay, I’ll give you my top three steps to freedom from 95 percent of the hackers out there (just because I doubt anyone is even listening):
| Really? I find this really hard to believe. He's a smart cookie who knows how to hack into lots of different systems, but he's to stupid to realize he's being interviewed by a reporter who's planning to write an article based on this interview? I don't think so.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I've got this gut feeling that something's just not quite right. I say this hacker is ficticious, and someone just made up the interview. |

That could be true Endobiotic but isn't the Colorado Springs Business Journal an "official" newspaper there? Still, some of the things asked and some of the stuff that he says does seem kind of strange.
I got a crack out of this.. Quote:
Are you scared of getting caught?
Not even. The local cops (Barney Fifes of the world) are about 20 years behind me. The feds (FBI, Secret Service, NSA, etc.) have bigger fish to fry! No, getting caught is for lamers like Mafia Boy, who run denial of service attacks against Yahoo! or stupid teenagers who try to break into the Pentagon.
| Don't know why, but I enjoyed reading this. |

I didn't find that part unconvincing, most of security is just taking care of the obvious and stupid.
What I did find less than convincing was Monkeyboy's portrayal of himself. I suspect he isn't nearly as effective as he portrays himself, just another person pretending to be someone important. That would explain why he did the interview too.
What exactely is a "hacker" anyway, and what qualifies one for being competent when you're doing illegal things? Does credit card fraud make one more of a "hacker" or just more of a criminal?
Whatever....I can't say I'm too worried about that monkey getting into my system....lol. |

More than half the people on this board can do everything & more that guy is talking about. They don't because they don't need to prove things to anyone. They all have jobs an go about their own lives.
It is like Kevin Mitnick's story. Supposedly one of the best & most dangerous hackers around...tell he hacked a guy's machine that worked for the phone company in California. The guy decided to help that FBI track Kevin and HE CAUGHT HIM. Just shows that there are a lot better people out there that these "l33t h@X0r$"

This guy's a complete slacker. Come on! Hacking machines that are insecure already? Jeesh. Give me something I can applaud you for. Like hacking a large corporation.
Going after people's individual computers is just being a lamer.
Get a new hobby or step up.

I agree with Endobiotic. This reads like a completely fake article. Scare the people with a story about some kid who can just walk up to your computer and get into it then give them some obvious tips about security. The bad part is that whether this guy is real or not, there probably are lots of kiddies out there that are just like this guy. |
