for the curious kid
If you are talking about the kid who breaks into the school and changes the time that the assembly in the auditorium will happen well him you slap on the wrist.
The destructive hacks like the virus fellars.
But the malicious hacks should be tied on a belt sander treadmill and it should be set at 12 MPH for 3 hours what ever is left you can try to reform.
They should catch them and cut off their fingers toes and remove their tongue so that they cant use speach software.
As for finding the problems with software let them go to MS and show them the error of their ways. Get a job exploiting flaws in software and consult with ms.
The finding flaws thing is rediculous. Gee I hacked the creditcard company. They had to shut down for a week to retool. They had to fire several people to look good to stock holders. customers were embarrased as their credit was impuned. people were unable to purchase due to validation problems so packages were late making forclosure inevitable for them. Oh yea hacks are good for society. If you find a flaw tell MS you found it and ask them for money to show them how.
You Hack my business, We hack off your body parts would be a good start. |

I saw a movie this weekend with that chick from tomb raider
angelina jole or something like that.
It glorified hackers... I hated that them making the hackers the heros, but she looked good so I give the movie a thumbs up for the all important yum factor.
Lock em up though |

The kids a "Cracker" not a Hacker. A Hacker builds things and shares his knowledge with others. A Hacker knows several programming languages. A hacker is a good thing.
A Cracker breaks things. He uses his knowledge to create kaos and shares nothing but a headache.
Hollywood has blemished the good name of Hacker. (The originators of the ARPA NET.) For a more indepth explaination, http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/hacker.htm
This kid approached the situation all wrong. What he should have done was to contact the companies in question and got them to hire him to test their security or at least he could have bet them he could get into their system and made a pretty penny doing so.
He was and probably still is very single minded. He doesn't know how to think ahead of his actions. He was a kid playing with a loaded gun and knowing full well how to use one.
There are certain situations with a car where you can loose your licence for life. He should loose the use of a computer for life.
Cheers!

Lock em up though | You know some peoples jobs deal with hacking right? IMHO i thought the movie was a great idea. Not all hackers are evil nor heros. |

I liked that movie. As long as you take into consideration that not everything they do in that movie is based on FACT(for some reason people we getting pissed off that when they were "hacking" it was all swirly colors etc...) I mean seriously who wants to sit and watch people code for a few hours? I mean seriously I may be a geek but I dont think that would be a good movie.
Sooo they take some liberties with how hackers actually do stuff, and in doing so they show hackers in a good light. Most hackers are white hat you know. You dont hear about them because they are the ones keeping you safe from the big bad evil hackers that the media shows all the time to make you hate hackers. You know those nasty virus's that you got in that email attatchment that you then proceeded to send to everyone in your address book? Who do you think it is that kills the virus, puts out patches that block the virus from doing its job, and track down the person that released it in the first place?
HOLY CRAP!!! You mean it was HACKERs that did that? |

Ever heard a real hacker say things like, "You’re really fixated on helping people, aren’t you. Okay, I’ll give you my top three steps to freedom..."
Some useful information, but not much.
