World Record 25.6 Terabit/s Optical Transmission

Quote:
Experiments Also Yield an Unprecedented 3.2 Bits/Second Hertz (b/s/Hz) of
Spectral Efficiency

ANAHEIM, California, March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alcatel-Lucent
(Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced in a post deadline paper
accepted at the OFC/NFOEC conference in Anaheim, California, that combined
research teams from the United States and France successfully transmitted a
world record 25.6 Terabits per second (Tb/s) of optical data over a single
fiber strand, using 160 Wavelength-Division Multiplexed (WDM) channels -
enough bandwidth to transmit the data from more 600 DVDs per second.
[Editor's note: A terabit is a trillion bits of data.]
These results far surpass the previous transmission record of 14 Tb/s,
established in September 2006.

Hell yeah.
With that in my house I could probably get a ping of 4 in Quake 3 Arena...

Exclamation
GIVE ME HIGH SPEED OR GIVE ME DEATH

That's all fine and well, but will the ISP's allow people a "true" high speed connection? Like 25+ MbPS.

It would help reduce bandwidth if you ask me. Why? because imagine everyone able to obtain what they need faster. Except for streaming media I think it would help.

I can't stand the comy. speed in this country.
