| Best Buy, Netflix join HD DVD dogpile (BR4tW)
From ArsTechnica: Quote: |
To say that 2008 has not been kind to the HD DVD format is a bit of an understatement. As the Consumer Electronics Show began, Warner Bros. announced that it would drop support for HD DVD during the first half of 2008. Shortly thereafter, HD DVD experienced its worst-ever week of sales. Today, HD DVD was dealt a couple of big body blows: Netflix announced that it would stop renting movies in the HD DVD format and Best Buy has decided to exclusively recommend Blu-ray players to consumers.

Dear David,
You're receiving this e-mail because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.
While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.
Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens.

Sony's corporate "ethics" aside, DRM is my problem with Blu-ray: a BD-J virtual machine to implement BD+ DRM by reading code from a "special" BD-ROM Mark data area.
With that said, I typically prefer pay-per-view instead of purchasing movies, which is a driving factor in me migrating more to the digital content delivery of movies via the Internet (CinemaNow, MovieLink, etc.) than relying upon optical discs.
Don't take me wrong. I can deal with and even support a moderate level of DRM when leasing content. Case in point, I have a Napster account plus occasionally use CinemaNow. However, if buying content, DRM is a different issue for me. |

Personally though, i fail to see how DRM even becomes an issue with purchased media as you already purchased it. Now if your say ripping it to watch on your Ipood, i can understand that you dont want to buy a second copy of the movie from Itunes to watch it but rest assured that someone will break the DRM eventually. I dont think there is any DRM left to break at this point so all those code monkeys are probably itching for the next thing to break. |
