| eBay loses to Louis Vuitton
eBay has been ordered to pay $61M to Louis Vuitton for the fakes it allowed to be sold on its site. Quote:
The fashion company, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, is home to such prestigious brands as Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Fendi, Emilio Pucci and Marc Jacobs, and had complained that it was hurt by the sale of knockoff bags and clothes on eBay.
Pierre Godet, an adviser to LVMH Chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault, said the Paris court's decision was "an answer to a particularly serious question, on whether the Internet is a free-for-all for the most hateful, parasitic practices."

Awesome for who?
Louis Vuitton sells highly overpriced bags.
Ebay may be one of the best outlets for sellers and consumers... |

This is actually the second time they've been hit in France for counterfeit items. The first case was with Hermes bags Quote:
Three weeks ago, eBay was convicted by a French court of selling counterfeit goods and ordered to pay 20,000 euros in damages to French luxury group Hermes.
That court ruling, which marked a first in France, found eBay directly responsible for the sale on its website of three Hermes bags including two fakes, for a total of 3,000 euro
| Its good in one sense that they are being held accountable for items being auctioned, however since they have no real way to verify the validity of items they don't control it places them in a hard spot. And we know shit slides down hill so they will be making life harder on sellers.

Counterfeit is illegal but...
"hurt by the sale of knockoff bags and clothes on eBay"
*cough* Highly doubt it.
When a bag is hundreds of dollars/pounds there is no way a "Joe average" can afford it. They aren't gonna buy the real deal anyway so IMO it is not a lost sale to be fair, get real.
*I do not endorse counterfeit goods in any way as it is illegal in the UK.
