Microsoft, Intel goof up Windows 7's "XP Mode"
From Ars Technica:
When news of Windows 7's "XP Mode" came out recently, there was much rejoicing among those who were concerned about legacy support in Microsoft's upcoming OS. But now we learn that Microsoft and Intel have contrived to make XPM unavailable to many Intel users.

Wow ... Well it looks like im screwed. E7200 does not Support VT which means no XP Mode.

for software that may not run properly in Windows 7 for whatever reasons, basically legacy support more or less.
I doubt much of what I run now will have problems with running in Windows 7, but just incase there is, I'd kind of like to have something like this Virtualized XP mode so I don't have to swap back and forth with Dual Booting, or anything.
it also saves from buying expensive software options like VMWares software (and one or two others I think) to run XP and still be able to use the actual hardware of the machine in the VM, with in Windows 7, you could opt for MS Virtual PC, but last time I tried that, it mimicked much of the hardware, or didn't run that smoothly trying to use it. would only run a 8MB video card in the virtual environment with really basic 3D support, despite having a 512MB more current card in the machine, unless that's changed with newer versions?i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Let's all stamp on progress! Damn Microsoft for making a superior OS just because I can't use my old crappy software in it!
Honestly, if there wasn't so much concern with legacy support, we'd be leagues ahead of where we are in computers right now.

A long time "friend" on another site is upset that she can't get Office 97 that is 12+ years old to install on Win 7
Oh boo hoo hoo.

I still use Office 97. Cause it loads instantly, I don't have to wait for it to thrash around. I am running into problems with it being too old, sometimes have to use Open Office, but that takes so long to load too.
Progress means leaving somethings behind, but I'm not sure we are making progress!Asus M4A785TD-V EDO, Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 Gig DDR3 1333 Win7 64 Home

As of yet . . . I haven't been able to get the video for PCTV-to-Go to work on my Windows 7 64bit. (I'll play with that some more this weekend. . .
) For a temperary fix, I tried it in XPM and it works . . .
That software isn't "old" or "legacy" software either . . .

Mainly its the server cpus that support this virtualization functionality (with esxi/hyper-V) so it doesnt surprise me that a lot of desktop cpus dont support this.

My laptop from over 2 years ago supports VT apparently as it can run Virtual XP.

Intel core 2 series? E6xxx series? (noticed that it seems a lot of the E2xxx, 4xxx, 5xxx, & 7xxx series seems to lack it and/or some of the lower end Q8xxx Quads that don't)
otherwise I know the list I saw also had some of the Pentium D and its variants listed as supporting that feature too.
I haven't read too deeply into any of the articles about this, basically skimmed them, and then referred to the lists, but have they said anything about where AMD CPU's are on this? all or some of them support this feature?
oddly, all of my current (or former current) systems except the Qpack with the E2140 support the XP mode (E6400, Q6600, i7 920).i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

So im curious how did MS and Intel goof up this?
-
May 14th, 2009, 11:02 AM #20
I wouldn't say Intel goofed up, more like Microsoft did if anything, since its using their Virtual PC software or tech or whatever you want to call it, dependent on the so called Virtual Technology built into select Intel CPU's.
Some that have been out for a while before they came out or even mentioned about this new XP mode. add in that a LOT of the Intel CPU's are lower end budget or mainstream units, where they have cut features or whatever to cut costs of those units to meet that budget range of products.
but in any case, I guess it just means people will need to upgrade to a CPU that supports the feature if they NEED the XP mode.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green
