Real Loses DVD Copy Software Lawsuit
Hollywood studios have prevailed against Real Networks, with the court upholding an injunction against RealDVD for violating DVD CSS licensing and the DMCA. It remains to be seen if Real will appeal the decision.
Judge Patel's conclusion on the DMCA aspect was quickly arrived at: "RealDVD products are designed primarily for circumvention of that [CSS] technology, as Real has admitted its intent upon initial development was to create a software product that copies DVDs to computer hard drives so that the user does not need the physical DVD to watch the content."
