Lost or stolen Kindle? Amazon says you're out of luck

    From Ars Technica:

As the Kindle takes off in popularity, losses and thefts will as well. After hearing one reader's tale of woe after losing his Kindle, we discovered that there are not that many options for recovery, though there could be if Amazon really wanted to offer them.
Kinda sad really that this may not have ever come up in the design stages and now they dont know how to handle it.

I cant think of any other technology that allows for recovery accept for the new feature on mobile me and the iphone or some third party software on a laptop. Tracking down from a cell tower isnt an exact science unless the thing has GPS on it

Even tracking my Cell tower is more accurate then a diving rod though. Especially if you track it moving between towers.

The thing is that its a known that Amazon can pull data off the kindle remotely, they did that with a book they lost/revoked the digital rights too. If they can remotely pull data like that, they should be able to do a remote data kill and effectively make the device a paperweight. This would make it pointless to steal except for parting out the internal components. Make it have no value and then its no longer a theft item.

Meh personally, I don't see why Amazon should. What if they brick the wrong kindle? Then Amazon is responsible for fixing it and dealing with it. Stopping service to the kindle is a given, and maybe mark it as stolen so if someone tries to activate it or something. *shrug*

People steal, its a fact of life. Watch over your stuff
