CrunchPad Renamed JooJoo, Priced at $499

Call it the CrunchPad. Call it the JooJoo tablet. I suspect Michael Arrington could have another word for it. Whatever the name, Fusion Garage intends to debut the hyped portable computing device on Friday with an estimated price tag of $499, which is a distinct departure from the project's initially targeted $200 price point.

In a demo during the webcast, the device powered on in about 10 seconds, and showed icons for web-based services like Twitter, Hulu, CNN, and Gmail, though the JooJoo will not come pre-loaded with any apps, Rathakrishnan said. Scroll through them with your finger as you would on the iPhone.

CNET has scored a pre-release review sample of the JooJoo, though a summation statement in the first paragraph questioning the product's viability is hardly inspiring for what basically amounts to an entry-level tablet computer with a $499 price tag.

The JooJoo Web slate is based around a 12.1-inch diagonal 720p capacitive touch screen. The specs include: 1366x768-pixel resolution, a built-in camera, mic, and speakers, one USB port, and a card slot. There's 4GB of cache memory. What's the processor? Rathakrishnan wouldn't say. He also won't say who makes the touch screen.
