Despite Microsoft claims of Linux representing a mere 7% of netbook sales, analyst comments reportedly attributed to market demographics firm ABI Research paints a significantly different picture by indicating about 32% of netbooks shipped in 2009 feature various distributions of the popular open source operating system.

Orr was also said to have predicted that increasing sales of ARM-based netbooks will continue to push up Linux netbook share, especially in less developed countries where overall netbook growth will increase at the highest rate. As a result, ABI projects that Linux will overtake Windows on netbooks by 2013.
