Flaw In New Intel 6-Series Boards Prompts Potential Recall

According to a press release issued by Intel this morning they have found a flaw in on of the chipset on the new 6 series "Sandy Bridge" boards that is prompting an immediate stoppage of shipping and a potential recall.

Intel Identifies Chipset Design Error, Implementing Solution

Note this is not affecting the chips as some people, and other sites have claimed. Its a chip on the motherboard that degrades over time. Your system should run fine for now.

Edit: Manufactures have not yet determined what to do. There are no replacement boards ready and they don't expect them to be ready for several months. So for now there is no official recall however it is very likely there will be one once the boards are in place. The suggestion is to hold off on buy a new Sandy Bridge setup until the issue has been worked out, which according to several sources won't be until April or May.

    LMFAOROFLOL!!!!

Too bad for the new people who upgraded to Sandy Bridge, but its a win for those of us who've been annoyed/perturbed, etc, at Intel releasing yet another new socket design for what amounts to a revision of the "older" (Less than 2 year old) hardware, rather than a revolutionary upgrade.

Just read this on Tom's, Related to the above Topic:

The Hidden Cost Of Intel's $700 Million SB Recall

And as the article suggests I did just check Newegg and they did COMPLETELY pull all Socket 1155 Boards and CPU's, all based on Sandy Bridge, from their site, not even one random errant item was missed.

So Newegg and many others also have taken this thing very seriously, which is GOOD to see.

Only wish for those that bought the 1st Gen Phenom's they could of done something similar, granted it was unlikely the average user would of encountered that problem, but still would of been nice to have pulled them, and eventually have them replaced, rather than a workaround bios update that would disable the defective part of the CPU.

Newegg is making this extremely easy to fix I will say. I just built 3 sandy rigs last week for a few friends, and I've already talked with egg about returning them. On 2 of them they are letting me send back CPU+Mobo+RAM for a full refund. And on the third system they are letting send back the CPU+Mobo for an I5 setup. All parts that are getting back to me are getting free upgraded shipping, so really I have no complaints.

And from what I read, it's a recall concerning the Sata 3gbps controller. The new sata 6gbps controller is not flawed at all they think. So really, if your only using 2 sata ports (the newer ports) your fine, and this won't effect you at all. Or the other work around is to get a dedicated Sata PCI/PCIe/etc card. That will completely go around the "flawed" controller. So really, I understand why they pulled the sandy boards and cpu's, but at the same time, there are still TONS of people looking to buy them. And on top of that, it's made the prices rise for the ones that "must have it now!"

Either way, props to Intel and Newegg for handling this situation. I think they've done a bang up job so far.

If its only THAT kind of a problem, its too bad we can't buy some of the "defective" boards at a dirt cheap price...

Though that'd be like trying to buy some moldy or bad food products from a store if your just going to feed it to the birds, they won't let you out of fear of chance of someone eating it and getting sick and ending up in a lawsuit (at least where I work thats our policy on that).

In the same way I think Intel is doing the same thing, covering their ass in a similar manner. Even though like you mentioned there are work arounds, at least for those of us who know how. But keeping in mind we're the minority compared to mainstream users, who expect a fully functioning product and who would not hesitate to jump onto the lawsuit bandwagon.

But reading some of the Comments on Tom's Facebook page, Immediately the first few comments were from AMD fanboy's putting Intel Down because of it.

I'm just laughing at Intel, because like I said I'm pissed with the Whole leaving 1366 in the dark, however if like JP was saying if 2011 is rumored to not even come out, and as long as 1366 CPU's and boards (PCIe 3.0, Quad channel, etc), then I'd be fine.

though if 1155 replaced both 1156 & 1366 together, there'd be hell to pay.

Right now I'm more inclined to switch sides again, with Intel going that route with another socket, but am STILL waiting to hear more, or even see anything on AMD Bulldozer parts (Prices, Performance compared to Intel, features, etc), haven't read anything new in a couple months.

Though running Nvidia Cards, unfortunately, unless Nvidia comes out with a new Chipset, or 3rd parties offer SLI on AMD chipset boards, I'm pretty much stuck with Intel.

Still, by the time I'm ready for new Board/system, I'll probably be moving up to something more than the GTX 470 anyways (6950/6970, or probably the HD 7xxx series, though by then, they'll have come full circle, ax out the "HD" in the name, and they'll be back at Radeon 7xxx series which is where the Radeon's started over 10 years ago LMAO)
