Ok this may have been discused before, and I am not sure if it is in the right place, so moderators please forgive me, and move this thread to where it belongs.
I sit down tonight, and point my browser to good old Techimo, and what do I see in the news section, layoffs here, layoffs there.
The economy is going down the provibial (spelling?) *deleted*, yet technology is advancing at record speeds.
Now can anyone please explian this to me: how can technology be improving so fast, yet all the companies are laying people off?
Honestly am I missing something?
This is really disturbing since I just graduated, and am now looking for a job, so one can see how this is rather unnerving, especialy for one that is in the IT field.
I am curious to read your comments, and opinions of how long this will last, or is this staying with us.
Plus fill in the facts that I am missing, because I know I am missing many. Please refrain from using foul language in the forums - Fingers

As far as I know there is a STOP on to employ new people. The people that already work on the company work harder because they won't risk their job. They are willing to work even beyond 40 hours for that cause. This explains there is allot accomplished with lesser people. |

There is a lot of ebb and flow in the economy...it goes up, it goes down...it will go up again.

Luckely we in Europe have a prosper future since all the Baby Boomers will be reaching 60-65 in less then 5 years. Those born in 45/46 will leave the working force leaving many gaps for us new guys to fill. Until then we just have to see a way to survive this.
Like John Prophet says, we reached the lowest part now. Things are only bout to get better in near future. |

This does make sense, but it does sound that it would casue a big problem in creating a class structure again. As of now, the class structure, although existant, is very faint. By doing this, those who work hard will make money, but then those who are jobless become poorer and poorer.
That then casues alot of people not to buy the new technology that these companies are coming up with, making them loose money and lay off more people. To me these companies are suciding themselves. |

I know what you mean its throwing in your own glasses. But thats how the economy works and did before. Times are much alike begin '90ties.
The economy flows like a SIN that goes up in amplitude. You have a down time but still it will go up eventually |

Survivial comes first
I have already made peace with my self in the fact that after four years of education (lets not start there) I might be forced to work outside of my field, or in a blue collar job, but I guess work is work, and actually working with my hands will make me a better man in the end. |

Actually IMO, technology and technology jobs are not related. technology jobs are based on the economy, wheras technology is based on science.
