BIG time problems

Hey folks,
A coworker of mine is having problems with his computer and asked if I can help, so Im hoping you can give some advice.
He is apparently having problems with both his cdrom and cdwriter, neither of them will read. (cdburner wont write). He suspects a virus. He also says that he gets this error at startup>>> "required dll file, egnsengine.dll was not found".
Also, when he tries to load any programs he gets this message>>>" internal error 2203 c:/windows/installer/2FA862F.IPI-2147287035"

He says otherwise the computer runs ok, his main thing is that he wants to be able to download his cdwriter software and burn some family pictures on to a cd, but with both the cdrom and writer not working he is out of luck.

Any suggestions? Could a virus or something have caused both his cdrom and burner not to work?
Who is up to the challenge to solve this problem? hehehe

Thanks in advance.

Lenny

What OS is he running? If it's WinXP, perhaps a repair install would replace the missing files/components? Afaik, no virus can directly, physically harm an optical device, just mess up the system files, etc. If it is a virus infection, be sure to turn off System Restore before a repair install or he could get re-infected.

Try the TrendMicro site and run the virus scan that is free.

After that check the Device Manager for any error messages.

Hmm, I'm not too familiar with WinME. I think it has System Restore like WinXP but I don't know if it has a similar repair install option.

It does have the restore but not sure about the repair option. I am sure that there is one on the original cd though.

I dont like ME either. (windows ME that is..lol)
XP is by far the best.

Im just wondering what could have caused these error messages and why wont his cdrom or writer work. Seems odd that both would fail at the same time.

Another thing to try is remove them both in Device Manager and reboot and let Windows reinstall the drivers for them.

The only solution that I have found to most ME problems is backup the info and reload the OS which stinks in your friend's case since there is no writter to record the files to.

Has he un/installed any programs lately? Did he download anything new?
