I have a system running Windows 98 SE and IE 6 that I'm having quite the time with. For whatever reason, Internet Explorer will not allow new browser windows to open. Well, they open... But it basically "freezes"... no content loads, and your only option is to basically close the window. (This is a browser problem.) ..
I tried the "Repair" option in the Internet Explorer Install/Uninstall area, rebooted, no luck... So I used the option to remove IE 6 and revert back to IE 5... Presto, it works... New windows open fine.
So, I try to go back to IE 6... Download the installer, install, etc, etc... Quits working again!!
Nothing has been installed on this system that should be doing this... I've run AdAware, Norton AV, etc... No luck.
Any advice would be appreciated..
Thanks.
Update
- Ran SFC, no luck.
- Followed the directions in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];281679 .. No luck.

Have you considered using Mozilla as your browser?
I'm using it with WinXP, it's a solid browser with more options than IE.
The popup blocker in Mozilla is great!
Just a suggestion... |

I already use Mozilla.
This isn't my system, and the person who uses it wouldn't find the move to Mozilla as smooth as you or I.
Either way.. I'd rather get this fixed than ignore it and have them learn to use a whole new browser.

Are there any other 98 updates that have not been installed?

It could possibly be your Anti-Virus/Firewall... I've had numerous problems with internet and using anti-virus programs... Especially Norton. They don't have to be running, they just have to be ON the computer to cause the problems. |

I agree with agathodaimon - I used to have Norton Securities on my system but found it causes a lot of stupid errors. I go to disable it to find you cannot disable it! As long as it is in memory then its still working even though it claims to be disabled...
Here is a link that may or may not help: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
I doubt this will help since you did a fresh install of IE6.. It never hurts to try though.
good luck |
