headphones and jack

hey guys, whats up? ok, heres my problem. i have 1 jack on the front of my computer for plugging in microphones and headphones. anyways, when i plug my microphone into it, it works, however, when i try to plug in my headphones, it doesnt work. i used the same jack for both, and the mic works but the headphones dont. the headphones use to work, but then i reformatted my computer, and now it doesnt. when there is music playing, and i plug in the headphones, there is a slight crackling in the headphones, kinda like it knows that something is being sent to it. i was wondering if there is anything i can do to fix this. if its inside the computer, im not gonna touch it. but i am hoping its more of a software deal.

It sounds like there is a missing, or loose cable in the computer somewhere. The only the way to find out is to look in the case.
