Question
Computer Randomly Restarting...

Hi... I'm new to this forums but I have come with a problem. My computer Has been restarting on its on randomly and its been running very slow. I don't know if they are connected at all. I really need to fix this because I have a Research Project to write or I will fail 9th grade... not good. So as you can see I'm pretty new to computers. All I have done so far is run my adaware to delete spyware but that didn't help at all. I don't know a lot of My comp's specs but I will suply what I know. If I don't give enough please tell me what to add.

Comp Specs:
Compaq 5005CL
1.1GHz AMD athlon Proccesor
128 memory
60.0GB Harddrive
Nivdia 16mb graphics Card

All I know right now. I search more. I have to be brief, my comp is due to restart soon. And if your wondering, yes, I know my comp sucks ass and is totally not for gaming, LOL. Thank ahead of time for your help.

It could be that your cpu is overheating, one thing you could try is to open the side of you case and give it a good clean (with a hoover or some compressed air) esp around the heatsink and fan on top of the chip. Dust can build up in the grills of the heatsink and this can raise the temperatures alot. Also try using a program like hmonitor or motherboard monitor to see if the temps are too high:

The problem could also be a result of a power supply that is begining to fail, but I hope it isnt that as a replacement for that machine could be a pain.

What OS are you using? If 2K or XP it could possibly be the blaster worm and you need to get the MS update.
Otherwise it very likely could be a heat issue. Try removing the cover to allow more air movement and see if it stops restarting.
Keep us informed.

CRAP... lol I forgot to ask. How do I reduce the lag on my computer, its taking a while to open things like explorer and my computer. And wheneva I play CS my comp like temp. freezes in the server loading and I get timed out... stuff like that.

ME is the last of the DOS based OS's and it can't get the blaster worm. Only the NT based OS's like the NT series, 2k and XP are vulnerable to blaster.

If it is a heat issue cleaning will probabbly help. Also, route the IDE ribbons so they don't block airflow from the fan going across the CPU and other components.
Make sure that all your fans are working including the one in the power supply.

Nothing like wiping the HDD and reinstalling the OS...start from scratch. Also, if you have an OS onhand, like win2000Pro, you can just install that, and eleminate the bloat of the all the other
Compaq BS that will slow you down. Also, pick-up some cheap ram-used, even. It'll make a difference.
