Go into your bios and set it to boot from the cd-rom. Boot the pc with the XP upgrade cd in the cd-rom. When it starts installing XP it should ask you to remove the XP cd and insert the 98 cd so it can verify that you own 98. Then switch cd's back to the XP disk and continue installation. You don't need to install 98 to use the XP upgrade cd.

if you just want the 98 loaded, boot your computer using the boot cd. when the boot is done, remove the boot cd and insert the 98 setup cd. type setup in the prompt (d:\setup) then press ENTER. the 98 setup should start by then. just follow the onscreen instructions.

Are you planning to put XP on in addition to 98? If so there are some extra steps you should take before installing 98. That would be using a 98 boot disk and running fdisk, then creating a fat32 primary partition that does not use up the entire drive. You can then install 98. After that you can put the XP cd in and it will eventually come to a screen asking where to install to. You move to the unpartioned space, and hit c. This will make an unformatted partition (of a size of your choosing). You can then tell XP to install to that (i'd recommend using quick NTFS or FAT32). XP will then set up a menu during computer startup which allows you to choose which OS you want. I'm sure that seems pretty complicated to you but I can provide more descriptive instructions if you really want to do that. It is kinda nice if you ever need 98 to run something.

You can of course use the 'compatibility feature' in XP, to run programs in "Older OS" mode.

This explains it better than I can.

Rusty.
