Ok, I installed WINXP on my moms machine after reformatting and uninstalling Win98. However, now there are some items the computer is not recognizing. They are: - Game Port
- MPU4-1
- OPTiAudio16
- USB Port (PNP)
- V1433VQH-U 336 PNP Modem
- COM Port 3
Does this mean the machine cannot handle XP? And if not, what can I put on it that it might run?
It is about 5 - 7 yrs old, has a 20gig HD, 128 MB Ram, 166Mhz Processor, and has had 98 on it for a few yrs now.
Thanks guys. Right now I cannot even get a modem to work on her machine! Ugh! |

Well, thats definately under spec for windows XP, but that still wouldnt affect the detection. Are you sure you got the motherboard chipset drivers installed? Sounds like a simple driver issue.
However if it were me I would put 98 back on it. For XP to run well you need at least roughly 500mhz and 256mb of ram (256 is more of a minimum than amount to run well) |

you probably just need the correct drivers...but if its an old machine there might not be any drivers for xp out there.
What kind of comp is it??
Do you know what motherboard??
Those first 3 items can probably be fixed just by finding the sound driver for the opti16
and then it is a matter of finding the modem driver....with it saying "36" I wonder if it is a slower 36k modem?

It IS a 36K modem and only has 64 MB Ram....lovely!
As well, I found the book on the motherboard, but I think it is too old to put XP on |

64mb of ram... how the hell does windows xp even boot without loading half of itself into virtual memory? Did you disable a ton of services? Once again I'd highly suggest reverting to 98 unless you plan on trying to use it only as a file server or something, where having xp or 2000 would help for networking capabilities. |

No I didnt have to disable anything, it was running fine, apart from the whole missing a modem and sound...lol
Now, I am going to revert to ME, which I have been told by a few people, shouldnt have any issues running. It is a working computer, so hopefully, I can get it back there. |
